{"id":841447,"date":"2025-11-03T13:00:59","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T11:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=841447"},"modified":"2025-11-03T13:01:04","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T11:01:04","slug":"south-africas-state-owned-investment-company-flunks-important-test-with-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/841447\/south-africas-state-owned-investment-company-flunks-important-test-with-8\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s state-owned investment company flunks important test with 8%"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s largest asset managers have failed to introduce responsible investment practices, with the Public Investment Corporation scoring just 8% in a study from NPO Just Share. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Just Share Asset Manager Responsible Investment Benchmark 2025 showed that South Africa\u2019s 20 largest asset managers are underperforming in responsible investment practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The responsible investment standards on governance, climate change, biodiversity and social impacts are based on international best practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just Share said that the findings show that the industry is failing to address the systematic risks that climate change, biodiversity loss and inequality pose for investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report uses methodology developed by UK-based non-profit organisation ShareAction, and assesses responsible investment performance against 20 key standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Just Share said the standards are ambitious, they are still achievable. 15 of the 20 assessed asset managers responded to the initial findings from Just Share.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just Share noted that 85% of the largest asset managers received only \u201cE\u201d or \u201cF\u201d grades, with scores below 25%.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four managers failed to meet even one of the benchmark\u2019s 20 key standards for responsible investment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top-performing local manager, Ninety One, scored just 30%, alongside a \u201cD\u201d grade. This would place it 24th globally across the asset managers assessed by ShareAction.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s largest asset manager, the Public Investment Corporation, has R2.69 trillion in assets under management and received an E-grade, with an overall score of 8%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was not the worst performer in South Africa, with Taquanta, Aluwani, Ashburton, and Fairtree all receiving an F.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-79.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"705\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-79-1024x705.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-841449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-79-1024x705.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-79-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-79-768x529.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-79.png 1193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Problem for retirees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just Share noted that a significant issue was the lack of information in the public domain, which makes it impossible to measure their responsible investment claims.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of the 20 asset managers publicly discloses their sustainability metrics across all their portfolios, with limited punishments for companies that do not apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Action to address climate risk is notably poor, with only 15% of managers having set net zero targets, compared to 80% of global assets assessed by ShareAction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>65% of South African managers do not restrict fossil fuel investments, despite South Africa&#8217;s need for financing to transition to a low-carbon economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most asset managers have not conducted climate scenario analysis or published portfolio transition plans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biodiversity is another blind spot, with 90% failing to meet any biodiversity key standards.
