The Pantry has expanded to Pretoria, and BusinessTech paid it a recent visit to see how it compares to the original location in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pantry<\/a> in Hazlewood opened on 29 October and forms part of the expansion of the popular forecourt in Rosebank, Johannesburg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stores were created by celebrity chef David Higgs and businessman Gary Kyriacou, who founded the Marble Hospitality Group in 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have opened several fine-dining restaurants across South Africa, including Marble, Saint, and Zioux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The business partners then expanded into the forecourt space next to a Sasol in Rosebank, which combined luxury with convenience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pantry offers a variety of items, including wines, grab-and-go meals, local produce, good coffee, baked goods, soft-serve, burgers, and pizzas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea for this store emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the partners sought a way to restructure their business, as restaurants suffered significant losses during that period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They thus decided to bring hospitality to the grocery sector and took the \u201cfancy but easy\u201d concept to The Pantry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opened in 2022, the location has become a popular destination for everyday shopping and hanging out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pantry has now expanded even further, opening new locations in the Standard Bank Rosebank office, the Pretoria location and another in Bassonia, South Johannesburg, which is set to open this month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With no petrol station attached, the Pretoria location is far larger than the Rosebank forecourt, which has allowed it to expand its grocery offerings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the 24\/7 location, the Hazlewood Pantry is not open 24\/7, but is in a larger location with its own parking lot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As frequent visitors to the Rosebank location, my partner and I decided to visit the Pretoria location to see if there were any notable differences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given that we decided to go during Sunday lunchtime, we elicited our memories by frantically searching for a spot in a whole parking lot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After we found a spot in front of the store, we walked through the Instagram-friendly balloon arch into a much larger store. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pantry in Pretoria was able to expand the size of the coffee, bakery, soft-serve and pizza counters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the luxury petrol station goods, ranging from steaks to kombucha, the store features a nice fresh-produce area near the tills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With every seat in the store taken, we decided to get some soft serves and walk around the surrounding Hazlewood area. We also got some focaccia bread, fresh fruit and drinks to take back home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those willing to wait for a seat, the store\u2019s classic pizza and burger options are available and look as good as those found at the Rosebank locations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing that stood out was how friendly the staff were across every interaction we had, despite the store being absolutely packed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every staff member had a smile on their face and was quick to help with queries that we had. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another nice aspect of the store was the diversity of the customers, ranging from young families to pensioners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From our experience, we highly recommend The Pantry in Pretoria. It may even be better than the original Rosebank location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
