{"id":842788,"date":"2025-11-11T13:52:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T11:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=842788"},"modified":"2025-11-11T13:52:59","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T11:52:59","slug":"former-springboks-private-security-giant-heading-to-the-jse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/842788\/former-springboks-private-security-giant-heading-to-the-jse\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Springbok&#8217;s private security giant heading to the JSE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Fidelity Services Group, South Africa\u2019s biggest private-security company, hired lenders to advise on an initial public offering on the continent\u2019s largest bourse, Chief Executive Officer Wahl Bartmann said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absa Group Ltd., Deutsche Bank AG, Nedbank Group Ltd. and Standard Bank Group Ltd. will work on the plan to bring the company to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, he said in an emailed response to queries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the market shouldn\u2019t expect an intention to float this year and that he isn\u2019t in a position to provide details on the business\u2019s valuation now.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RMB Morgan Stanley \u2014 a joint venture with FirstRand Ltd.\u2019s Rand Merchant Bank unit in South Africa \u2014 is also involved, said Bartmann, who played in the Springbok national rugby team in the late 1980s and early 1990s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deutsche, Nedbank, RMB Morgan Stanley and Standard declined to comment while Absa and didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s main bourse, owned by JSE Ltd., is on track for its best year for funds raised from IPOs since 2017, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa mobile-network operator Cell C Holdings Ltd. is planning an IPO that aims to raise R7.2 billion and will start trading at the end of the month, while artificial intelligence-driven financial-technology firm Optasia Group had the nation\u2019s first IPO so far in 2025 last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fidelity has more than 69,000 staff members working in housing complexes, casinos and cash-in-transit services, according to its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fidelity-services.com\/our-products-services\/fidelity-security-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With carjackings, armed robberies and one of the highest recorded murder rates in the world, violent crime has plagued South Africa for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are now 2.7 million registered private-security personnel \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2024-09-03\/south-africa-s-private-security-firms-thrive-as-murders-kidnappings-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than five times<\/a>\u00a0what there were in 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People in the industry estimate about 600,000 are active in jobs from guards in stores to those resembling paramilitaries. That compares with the 150,000-strong national police force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fidelity has made a number of acquisitions in recent years to add scale, including that of SSG Holdings, and US company Tyco\u2019s South African business, ADT.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From the field to patrols<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Fidelity.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Fidelity-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-821494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Fidelity-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Fidelity-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Fidelity-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Fidelity.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bartmann\u2019s father, Mick, started Springbok Patrols in 1963. By his telling, all the children in the family worked in the business from a young age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Bartmann\u2019s rugby career ended, he joined the family business full-time. With a B.Juris (Law) from RAU, he was well-positioned for the security business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under his leadership as chief executive, Springbok Patrols became Fidelity Services Group, Southern Africa\u2019s largest integrated security solutions provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1999, Fidelity concluded the first black economic empowerment deal in the security industry and became known as Khulani Springbok Patrols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was later sold to Fidelity, becoming Fidelity Security Services.
