{"id":843531,"date":"2025-11-17T17:29:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T15:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=843531"},"modified":"2025-11-17T18:02:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T16:02:07","slug":"first-walmart-in-south-africa-launching-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/843531\/first-walmart-in-south-africa-launching-this-week\/","title":{"rendered":"First Walmart in South Africa launching this week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>US retail giant Walmart has announced that it will be opening its first branded store in South Africa this week, on Saturday, 22 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Walmart store to open will be at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The store marks Walmart\u2019s first branded push into the country, where it already operates through Massmart and its Makro, Game and Builders brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US retail giant first acquired 51% of Massmart in 2010,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/621725\/massmart-reveals-more-detail-on-walmart-deal\/\"><strong>completing its acquisition of the group in 2022.<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;The company was then delisted from the JSE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart announced plans in September 2025 to start rolling out branded stores for the first time in the country, following Massmart\u2019s long-term struggles with brands like Game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, the group revealed that Clearwater Mall would be the location of its first store, with more stores opening in time. One other store has been confirmed in Fourways Mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The store\u2019s products will include fresh and frozen foods, groceries, health and beauty items, apparel, baby products, homeware, electronics, toys, sports and outdoor equipment, and seasonal goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart said that the store\u2019s product selection reflects a commitment to both local suppliers and international variety. Most products will be locally sourced, with the addition of selected global brands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReflecting Walmart\u2019s commitment to local community investment, the store\u2019s product offering is largely sourced from local suppliers, complemented by a curated selection of global brands,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the imported items are lifestyle products from the Beautiful range by Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore, which include kitchen appliances such as air fryers, kettles, blenders and toasters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart described the line as offering \u201cpremium quality, elegant design and soft pastel tones,\u201d adding that it \u201cadds an inspiring touch to customers\u2019 regular weekly shopping trips.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Scott, Walmart\u2019s merchandise vice president, said the goal is to strike a balance between familiarity and a sense of discovery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA key objective has been to broaden product choices in a way that creates a sense of discovery\u2014where shoppers are pleasantly surprised by options that bring interest and excitement to their everyday shopping experience,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The store will employ more than 80 staff members, led by Store Manager Onicca Mothapo, who brings two decades of retail experience. Walmart described Mothapo as a leader known for her \u201coperational excellence and people-first leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOpening this store is deeply personal.
