The dollar strengthened at the end of the United States’ prolonged government shutdown.

On Friday, the rand retreated further to R17.28 to the dollar as investors dumped riskier assets in the wake of delayed US data that failed to give direction on the US Fed’s interest rate path.

Despite the retreat, the rand remains resilient and is trading stronger relative to October. However, this resilience is not enough to counter the movement in international product prices.

This aspect of the equation is currently contributing to an under-recovery of between 23 and 28 cents per litre for petrol and between 80 and 97 cents per litre for diesel.

The differences in recoveries for petrol and diesel are typically associated with differing demand patterns. Notably, diesel is in greater demand in the norther hemisphere in the winter months.

Russian oil under pressure

Oil prices in November have largely been driven by geopolitical tensions and the US sanctions on Russian oil, which are set to take effect from Friday, 21 November.

The commodity has been trading in a tight range. On average, it has stuck around the $63 a barrel level, higher than the average in October.

According to Bloomberg analysts, oil pushed lower this week after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy agreed to work on a peace plan as US sanctions on two Russian oil giants took effect on Friday.

“The plan was drafted by the US and Russia, and Zelenskiy expects to talk with President Donald Trump in the coming days.
