{"id":844320,"date":"2025-11-24T09:31:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T07:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=844320"},"modified":"2025-11-25T11:35:52","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T09:35:52","slug":"takealot-beating-amazon-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/844320\/takealot-beating-amazon-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Takealot beating Amazon in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Takealot group has continued on its path to profitability, with the group recording a strong performance as it continues to outperform international competitors, namely Amazon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its financial results for the six months ended September 30, 2025, its parent company Naspers said that Takealot achieved substantial growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe group continued to broaden its market reach and successfully launched external fulfilment services to support third-party sellers,\u201d Naspers said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTakealot maintained its important presence in South African e-commerce, <strong>outperforming international competitors while advancing towards full profitability<\/strong>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Takealot saw a rise in competition with e-commerce giant Amazon launching its online marketplace in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Amazon is the largest e-commerce company in the United States, Takealot still remains the dominant player in the local market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from Google Trends shows that Takealot has remained a far more popular search for South African consumers than Amazon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its latest results, Takealot saw revenue grow by 23% in local currency, excluding mergers and acquisitions, with <strong>gross merchandise value (GMV)<\/strong> also up 16%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (aEBITDA) increased by US$10 million (R170 million per current exchange rates) in local currency, excluding M&amp;A, to $28million (R485 million), which Naspers called a step change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takealot.com\u2014the online retail business, including the newly launched TFS fulfilment operation\u2014saw revenue up 32% (26%) to US$385 million.
