With Black Friday just days away, online retailers in South Africa have been counting down to the big sales day with a multitude of deals and discounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Black Friday craze has evolved over the years to become a month-long sales period for most retailers, with a shift in focus from big-ticket items to essentials and household necessities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While this is especially true for traditional retailers and brick-and-mortar shops, the online space still carries on the tradition of sizeable deals for “wants”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originating in the United States, Black Friday was imported to South Africa in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Checkers often lays claim to starting Black Friday in South Africa in 2014, but local retailers were already carrying the name<\/strong><\/a> for sales days aligning with the US tradition back in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then online retailers have made the most of the sales buzz, giving shoppers access to a myriad of goods and services at a seasonal discount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa’s largest online retailer, Takealot, took a different approach to the sales period, launching its own Blue Dot Sale to coincide with the broader Black Friday trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with other major retailers, the sale has extended beyond just the weekend of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, has become an almost month-long weekly countdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the 2025 sale, Takealot has been running weekly specials on top of its usual one-day and TakealotMore deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in week three, the countdown sale will run until the official Blue Dot Sale launches on Friday, 28 November, offering up to 60% off selected items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competing online platforms in South Africa are also running similar countdowns and specials, with Amazon.co.za\u2014a relatively new entrant in the country\u2014also offering up to 60% off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South African staples in the online space, like Wootware and BobShop (aka bidorbuy), have tech-savvy shoppers covered with their sales, and The Foschini Group’s Bash platform is the gateway to major retail brands for digital shoppers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For shoppers looking for the essentials, more traditional retailers also have their online presence etched out, with Makro, Game, Pick n Pay, Woolworths and many others running online sales ahead of Black Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the day, expect physical stores to be running even more sales and specials in parallel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
