{"id":845222,"date":"2025-12-02T11:05:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T09:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=845222"},"modified":"2025-12-02T11:05:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T09:05:21","slug":"new-syndicates-plunging-south-africa-into-darkness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/845222\/new-syndicates-plunging-south-africa-into-darkness\/","title":{"rendered":"New syndicates plunging South Africa into darkness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Copper cable theft syndicates are wreaking havoc in South Africa, with the situation exacerbated by the availability of cheap replacements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copper thieves plunge households, businesses and factories into darkness amid widespread cable theft and power outages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eskom reported 771 transformer failures linked to vandalism and illegal connections in the first nine months of 2025, representing a 20% increase over the same period in the prior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Treasury estimates that copper theft costs South Africa around R7 billion per year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copper theft is now seen as undermining the nation&#8217;s energy security and economic recovery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JSE-listed South Ocean Electric Wire Company (SOEW) is calling for an immediate government crackdown on organised crime and lax import controls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOEW warned that rushed replacements with cheap, non-compliant cables from China are also exacerbating the problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This increases the risk of further blackouts for households, businesses and industries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen emergency fixes are desperately needed, whatever replacements are at hand are used; these are often cheap imports that fail local SANS standards, adding the risk of ongoing outages,\u201d said SOEW CEO Andre Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe scale of cable theft is staggering. It is believed that syndicates, sophisticated networks often involving insiders, scrap dealers and international buyers, target copper and aluminium lines across Eskom&#8217;s grid, municipalities and private networks.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith said that these groups coordinate via encrypted apps, bribe officials and use stolen vehicles for quick hits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also an increasing trend of armed robberies directly targeting copper manufacturers or resellers, putting lives at risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theft hits sectors like automotive and food processing the worst, but renewables are also affected, with solar farm cabling targeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calls for clampdown<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/andre-smith-e1764664005141.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/andre-smith-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-845224\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Andre Smith, CEO of South Ocean Electric Wire Company <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Smith said that theft becomes a vicious cycle, with thefts prompting hasty recplaments.
