{"id":845594,"date":"2025-12-05T07:39:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T05:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=845594"},"modified":"2025-12-05T07:40:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T05:40:10","slug":"good-news-about-makro-and-builders-checking-till-slips-when-shoppers-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/845594\/good-news-about-makro-and-builders-checking-till-slips-when-shoppers-exit\/","title":{"rendered":"Good news about Makro and Builders checking till slips when shoppers exit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Massmart COO Dries D\u2019Hooghe revealed that the group is re-evaluating the decision to check till slips at the exit at Makro, Builders Warehouse, and Game stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019Hooghe shared this information during a discussion about Massmart and Walmart in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V88seJIIT1Y\">Biznews podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Massmart is one of South Africa\u2019s largest retailers and operates numerous brands, including Makro, Game, and Builders Warehouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a presence in eight sub-Saharan countries and represents over 300 stores, which include retail and wholesale formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South African shoppers at Massmart stores have become accustomed to having their till slips and baskets checked at the exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This practice aims to reduce and prevent theft and loss due to criminal behaviour by shoppers and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process allows a quick comparison of the items in the trolley or bags with the list of items on the receipt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The security personnel at the door verify that all merchandise leaving the store has been adequately paid for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visible presence of staff checking receipts acts as a deterrent, discouraging potential shoplifters who know their goods will be inspected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also helps prevent situations where a cashier might not scan certain items for a friend or accomplice, allowing the items to be taken out of the store without payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another potential benefit is that it can alert the store if the cashier did not scan an item due to an oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while this sounds like a good idea around a boardroom table, the reality is that it frustrates honest shoppers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The security personnel typically pretend to check a few items and stamp the till slip instead of doing a comprehensive review of items in the trolley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Security staff can&#8217;t review all items in trolleys on exit, as it will take too long and drive shoppers away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Massmart reviewing checking till slips on exit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dries-DHooghe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dries-DHooghe-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-845598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dries-DHooghe-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dries-DHooghe-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dries-DHooghe-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dries-DHooghe.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Massmart COO Dries D\u2019Hooghe <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Biznews podcast host Alec Hogg asked D\u2019Hooghe about the frustration which checking till slips when exiting a store causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019Hooghe explained that it was one of the things they are reviewing as part of their focus on customer experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we are trying to do is that our internal problems don\u2019t become our customers\u2019 problems,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said many stores want to avoid losses, but that the actions they take to achieve this should not negatively affect their customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt creates friction.
