Eskom announced that it will implement stage 2 load shedding from 10:00 today (Sunday, 12 April 2015), which is likely to continue until 22:00 this evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is due to a shortage of generation capacity as several units are currently out of service due to planned and unplanned outages,\u201d Eskom said.<\/p>\n

News that Eskom would begin stage 2 load shedding comes after the beleaguered power utility warned on Friday that forecasted peak demand through the weekend until Wednesday was expected to outstrip supply.<\/p>\n

The capacity originally expected to be available to meet evening peak demand was 28,532MW (including open cycle gas turbines), while demand was forecast at 28,848MW.<\/p>\n

\u201cEskom would like to assure customers that load shedding is implemented as a necessary measure to protect the power system from a complete blackout,\u201d the company said in a statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cEskom calls on all customers to reduce the load on the electricity grid by urgently switching off geysers, air conditioners, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances throughout the day, which will reduce electricity demand.\u201d<\/p>\n

It added that commercial customers, particularly shopping centres and office blocks, can also make a big difference by switching off non-essential lights and not leaving office equipment such as photocopiers and computers in standby mode after hours.<\/p>\n
