{"id":849240,"date":"2026-01-29T11:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T09:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=849240"},"modified":"2026-05-27T14:20:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T12:20:53","slug":"dstv-owners-plan-to-stop-bleeding-subscribers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/849240\/dstv-owners-plan-to-stop-bleeding-subscribers\/","title":{"rendered":"DStv-owner&#8217;s plan to stop bleeding subscribers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Canal+ says it is working on a plan to turn Multichoice&#8217;s subscriber numbers around, with the South African broadcaster bleeding customers in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group is working on a &#8220;Strategic Update&#8221; that will be published alongside its full-year results, which will detail its plan of action and initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has already launched some of these actions, specifically in forging new content partnerships, renegotiating hardware prices and optimising Multichoice&#8217;s tech and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal+ says the acquisition of Multichoice is transformational, noting that it offers long-term growth potential and global scale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French broadcaster finally acquired the Multichoice Group (MCG) following years of negotiations, regulatory concerns and a squeeze-out of shareholders in a deal worth over R50 billion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal+ said the acquisition is part of its goal of capturing growth opportunities in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal+ noted that the African population should grow by 800 million by 2050, while the 5-year GDP growth forecast is 4.5% p.a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasing electrification and Pay-TV penetration rates are also expected for the continent. The group noted that it already has a strong record of capturing African subscribers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal+ Africa\u2019s subscriber base grew from 0.4 million to 9 million between 2010 and 2025. MCG\u2019s subscriber base increased from 3.9 million to 14.1 million between 2010 and 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, Multichoice had a peak of roughly 23.5 million subscribers in the 2023 financial year. The French broadcaster said it was best placed to help MCG return to its pre-2023 growth trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Building on its robust position across the continent, the combined group has started to roll out a comprehensive action plan focused on returning MCG countries to growth through short and<br>medium-term initiatives,&#8221; it said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further elements of the group&#8217;s plan for MCG markets will be provided at the Canal+ Strategic Update, which will be published alongside Canal+&#8217;s Full Year Results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver the last 10 years, we have quadrupled the size of our subscriber base to reach 40 million subscribers and become the market leader in around 40 countries across Europe and Africa,&#8221; added Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French broadcaster is expected to list on the JSE in the near future via a secondary listing, following Multichoice&#8217;s delisting from the JSE last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cost focus<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Canal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Canal-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-846978\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Canal-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Canal-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Canal-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Canal.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Canal+ noted that it will leverage its global scale to deliver significant cost &#8220;synergies.&#8221; The group will leverage its increased scale and footprint to optimise its estimated \u20ac8.0 billion (R150 billion) cost base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since gaining control of MCG in September 2025, actions taken that have already secured free-cash flow benefits of over \u20ac80 millon (R1.5 billion) include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New content partnerships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renegotiation of hardware prices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimisation of tech &amp; broadcasting infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refinancing of MCG\u2019s long-term debt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure the successful delivery of the targets, a unified management team for Africa has been created, capitalising on the combined talent pool of Canal+ and MCG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Short-term incentive schemes were updated for all members of the management team to reflect targets, while key group functions have also been centralised to leverage global scale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes the acquisition of sport and entertainment content, as well as technology and procurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A governance structure has also been established to monitor cost deliveries, while an integration and transformation office drives implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the acquisition of MultiChoice, CANAL+ has created a unique global entertainment platform<br>anchored in Europe and Africa,&#8221;
