Italy also remained in 10th place in 2026.

The US military budget, at $831.5 billion, is bigger than the remaining top five combined ($752.4 billion).

While the US doesn’t have the largest front line or the largest fleet of tanks, its massive military budget puts it far ahead of the rest in the rankings.

Top 10 military spenders 2026 (Defence Budget)

US: $832 billion

China: $303 billion

Russia: $213 billion

Germany: $127.4 billion

India: $109 billion

United Kingdom: $89 billion

France: $67.2 billion

Saudi Arabia: $64 billion

Japan: $58 billion

Australia: $57.4 billion

The USA has the largest air force among the top 10 global military powers, and China has the most troops and naval vessels.

Note: Some vehicles can fall under multiple classifications.

#

Country

Active Frontline

Reserve

Combat tanks

Air Force

Naval Vessels

1

US

1 333 000

799 500

4 666

13 032

465

2

Russia

1 320 000

2 000 000

5 630

4 237

747

3

China

2 035 000

510 000

5 870

3 529

841

4

India

1 431 000

1 000 000

3 913

2 183

343

5

South Korea

450 000

3 100 000

1 831

1 540

215

6

France

264 000

43 444

247

974

166

7

Japan

251 500

56 000

734

1 429

158

8

United Kingdom

141 330

31 940

227

288

116

9

Turkiye

481 000

380 000

2 284

1 101

192

10

Italy

165 500

18 300

200

714

285

40

South Africa

68 731

29 350

248

181

63

South Africa

South Africa is ranked 40th globally in terms of military strength, dropping seven spots from 2024 and remaining unchanged from 2025.

The country also remained in the same position in the ranking of the strongest military force in Africa, sliding by one spot from third in 2024 to fourth in 2025 and 2026.

This puts the country behind Egypt (1st), Algeria (2nd), and Nigeria (3rd) on the African continent.
