{"id":850072,"date":"2026-02-08T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=850072"},"modified":"2026-02-06T18:41:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T16:41:45","slug":"r2-5-billion-goldmine-for-south-africas-number-one-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/850072\/r2-5-billion-goldmine-for-south-africas-number-one-city\/","title":{"rendered":"R2.5 billion goldmine for South Africa&#8217;s number one city"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Events Permit Office of the City of Cape Town\u2014which was voted the top city in the world in 2025 by Time Out magazine\u2014approved a total of 1,064 events from 1 January to 31 December 2025, with 15 of these events generating over R2.5 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These events spanned a variety of occasions, including major international sports events, large festivals, and local community and cultural activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collectively, they drew more than 3,472,000 spectators and participants throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An assessment of 25 of these events indicates a comprehensive positive impact on the economy, including both direct and indirect economic contributions, benefits to the supply chain, and enhanced marketing value for the destination linked to these events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In addition,&nbsp;just&nbsp;seven of these events generated a combined PR and destination marketing value of more than R600 million, while creating trading and exhibition opportunities for over 2,000 SMMEs,&#8221; said Safety and Security Mayoral Committee Member, Alderman JP Smith.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This underscores our determination to work closely with event organisers to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, foster social cohesion, and position the Mother&nbsp;City&nbsp;as a globally competitive destination for events of all scales,\u2019&nbsp;he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Cape Town revealed the highlights from the 2025 events calendar, involving both sports and arts events, as seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A sold-out Springboks vs Australia Test match&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Barbarians&nbsp;first&nbsp;tour of South Africa&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two sold-out DHL Stormers United Rugby Championship fixtures&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proteas Women and Ireland&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proteas&nbsp;vs&nbsp;Pakistan&nbsp;New Year&#8217;s Test&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FIM World Supercross Championship 2025 season finale&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red Bull Flugtag&nbsp;return to&nbsp;Cape Town&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speed Classic&nbsp;Cape Town&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blitzboks&nbsp;back-to-back victories at HSBC SVNS&nbsp;Cape Town&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heineken F1 World Tour&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lebo M Live in Concert&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sold out Comic Con&nbsp;Cape Town&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Springbok Women vs Black Ferns XV&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over 100,000 people at Festive Lights Switch-On&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cape Town&nbsp;Carnival 15th anniversary edition&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cape Town has established itself as Africa\u2019s top events destination by effectively hosting a wide range of events, from local community gatherings to national and international signature occasions over the years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This achievement is highlighted by Cape Town being named the World\u2019s Leading Festival and Event Destination in 2018, 2020, and 2021, in addition to being recognised as Africa\u2019s Leading Festival and Event Destination on three occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global appeal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Cape-Town-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Cape-Town-2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-845717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Cape-Town-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Cape-Town-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Cape-Town-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Cape-Town-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cape Town&#8217;s global reputation has made it a sought-after destination for international sports athletes, conference delegates, and concert attendees to participate in events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Through its Special Events Support Process, the&nbsp;City&nbsp;provided support to scores of events in 2025, reinforcing our commitment to growing the events sector and strengthening its long-term economic sustainability,&#8221; said the City of Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to boosting tourism, the events provide many people with job opportunities, which also decreases the high unemployment rates of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our review of the calendar year shows that 25 events collectively created approximately 40,900 employment opportunities, spanning both permanent and temporary jobs,&#8221;
