{"id":850850,"date":"2026-02-12T20:06:48","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T18:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=850850"},"modified":"2026-02-12T20:06:48","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T18:06:48","slug":"ramaphosa-deploys-army-to-take-on-mafias-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/850850\/ramaphosa-deploys-army-to-take-on-mafias-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa deploys army to take on mafias in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a major warning to mafia-style organised crime groups, declaring that their grip on parts of South Africa\u2019s economy and communities will no longer be tolerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the World Bank released a report that estimated that the cost of crime in South Africa is around 9.6% of the country\u2019s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes direct losses of 2.6% of GDP, 4.2% in expenditures such as security and insurance, and 2.8% in opportunity costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report said these resources could elevate South Africa\u2019s growth rate by at least a percentage point if productively invested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, using data from think tank organisations and public statements by government officials, the Democratic Alliance (DA)&nbsp; was able to establish that organised crime syndicates are bleeding the national economy of R155 billion every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These groups include the Eskom mafia, illegal mining networks, wildlife syndicates, public infrastructure stripping networks, and the construction mafia, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe R155 billion is a conservative figure as it only reflects the direct costs incurred by the state or legitimate players in that specific sector as a result of the operations of criminal networks,\u201d the DA said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt does not factor in the knock-on effects that these crimes have on the economy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delivering his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday evening, Ramaphosa said criminal syndicates have reached a point where they are directly undermining economic activity and democratic stability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuilding sites are shut down by criminals. This must and will change,\u201d he said.\u00a0The president described organised crime as enemy number one in South Africa, and the most pressing internal threat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOrganised crime is now the most immediate threat to our democracy, our society and our economic development,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He made it clear that confronting these networks would be the government\u2019s top security priority in the year ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur primary focus this year is on stepping up the fight against organised crime and criminal syndicates.
