These pressures are forcing lifestyle changes, including reduced discretionary spending and increased reliance on debt, setting the scene for a nation of debt-ridden taxpayers who have reached the end of their tether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Competition Commission\u2019s inaugural Cost of Living <a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/capeargus\/news\/2025-09-05-cost-of-living-crisis-south-african-households-burdened-by-rising-prices\/?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Report<\/strong>,<\/a> electricity prices have increased by 68% and water by 50% over the past five years, far exceeding the general inflation rate of 28%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Balancing Act<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1200x675-Neil-Roets-Profile-Pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1200x675-Neil-Roets-Profile-Pic-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-851334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1200x675-Neil-Roets-Profile-Pic-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1200x675-Neil-Roets-Profile-Pic-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1200x675-Neil-Roets-Profile-Pic-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1200x675-Neil-Roets-Profile-Pic.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"><em>Neil Roets, CEO of Debt Rescue <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLife has become a painful balancing act for South Africans \u2013 especially those in the lower income bracket,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/debtrescue.co.za\/?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Debt Rescue<\/strong><\/a> CEO Neil Roets. \u201cIt is simply not sustainable to have an economy where millions of households are forced to choose between putting food on the table or keeping the lights on,\u201d he cautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Income falling short<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pmbejd.org.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/January-2026-Household-Affordability-Index-PMBEJD_28012026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity group (PMBEJD)<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;January 2026 report reveals that&nbsp;low-income workers spend over 57%\u2014sometimes exceeding 60%\u2014of their earnings on transport and electricity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that a worker earning R4 836 per month is left with roughly R1 974 for all other expenses, including enough food to meet a nutritious diet.&nbsp;Thieir wage falls short by over R1&nbsp;700 \u2013 which, by all accounts, is being covered by getting deeper into debt in some way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A glaring reflection of the failing economy is that income has not kept pace with price hikes over the past few years, driven partly by high inflation. This ongoing mismatch underscores that headline inflation figures alone do not capture daily hardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe impact of this on South Africans does not need to be spelt out,\u201d says Roets. \u201cWe see the effects everywhere we turn. Severe food insecurity, reduced purchasing power, rising debt, and a mounting feeling of mental and emotional distress among people from all walks of life. This comes through loud and clear in our most recent Debt Rescue survey stats, showing that 34.9% of people polled feel extremely stressed and anxious, while 29.3% feel worried and 23.1% are completely overwhelmed by their financial situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heavy Debt Load<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africans walked into 2026 carrying a heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BusinessReportZA\/posts\/south-african-consumers-are-heading-into-2026-carrying-a-heavy-debt-load-prompti\/1280294827467031\/?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>debt load<\/strong>,<\/a> due to the deadly combination of ever-escalating living costs, stagnant wages, and high interest rates that have forced millions of households to rely on credit, including expensive, short-term loans, to cover essential expenses like food, fuel &nbsp;and electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyinvestor.com\/finance\/115215\/south-africa-on-the-way-to-serious-trouble\/?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Treasury<\/strong><\/a> recently announced plans to stabilise the debt burden in the 2025\/26 fiscal year, acknowledging the unsustainable nature of the state\u2019s debt burden and growing debt service costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA concrete turn-around plan is needed urgently, because, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, if the economy doesn\u2019t recover, we are in deep, deep trouble \u2013 and trouble for the economy spells trouble for the consumer,\u201d warns Roets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taps running dry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As though life isn\u2019t tough enough for the man on the street, the country is now grappling with a worsening water crisis driven largely by failing municipal infrastructure, as a result of decades of neglected maintenance, and financial mismanagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, it is the most vulnerable who suffer the most in times of crisis, only this time lives are quite literally at stake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crisis has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/2026-02-16-experts-warn-of-worsening-conditions-despite-ramaphosas-intervention\/?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>chronic<\/strong><\/a> water shortages in several major metropolitan areas and provinces, with Gauteng, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal being the most heavily affected \u2013 prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to take the problem out of the hands of local government and firmly on the backs of Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina and Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Velenkosini Hlabisa to urgently addressing the water crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this, the problem is likely to remain the same or worsen, according to Governance expert and political analyst Professor Andre <a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/2026-02-16-experts-warn-of-worsening-conditions-despite-ramaphosas-intervention\/?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Duvenhage.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to from here?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe answer lies in prioritising the citizen,\u201d says Roets. \u201cThe urgency of this cannot be stressed enough right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Job creation is at the top of these pressing priorities.&nbsp; South Africa&#8217;s official unemployment rate stands at an unsustainable 31.9% according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=19007?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Statistics<\/strong><\/a> South Africa and Trading Economics, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=19007#:~:text=at%20Labour%20Underutilisation-,Beyond%20the%20Unemployment%20Rate:%20A%20Broader%20Look%20at%20Labour%20Underutilisation,work%20than%20this%20single%20figure.?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>youth<\/strong><\/a> unemployment remains critically high, between 45-60% depending on the definition used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While government\u2019s Operation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/gcis_document\/202601\/operation-vulindlela-q3-report-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Vulindlela<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(Phase II) is firmly in execution mode, showing, tangible albeit slow, progress in structural reforms designed to boost South Africa&#8217;s economy and create jobs, the latest government report fails to reassure regarding progress pertaining to job creation, instead focusing on the success achieved with regard to regulatory progress relating to electricity and water reforms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is exactly the point,\u201d Roets emphasises. \u201cWhile I understand government\u2019s intent on finding long-term solutions, ignoring the plight of its citizens while their heads are under water, is much like painstakingly tending to the garden while the house burns down,\u201d he points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deepening cost-of-living crisis lies at the core of the country\u2019s social turmoil, and it requires a coordinated reset that tackles both immediate household strain and the structural weaknesses of the economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the short term, this means protecting the most vulnerable through stronger oversight of administered prices such as electricity and municipal services, and sustained efforts to curb food prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Longer-term relief measures would include accelerating energy reform to stabilise supply and costs, reducing barriers to small business expansion, and prioritising labour-intensive sectors that can absorb South Africa\u2019s unemployed at scale, such as the tradesmen, <a href=\"https:\/\/ipa-sa.org.za\/public\/from-decline-to-opportunity-how-south-africas-sunrise-sectors-can-power-youth-employment\/#:~:text=Growing%20fruit%20like%20citrus%2C%20avocados,to%20fully%20unlock%20this%20potential.?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Sponsored+Article&amp;utm_term=February+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>agriculture<\/strong>,<\/a> construction and the retail and hospitality sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRestoring dignity and stability to households must become the central metric of economic policy \u2014 not simply achieving a lower headline inflation number.
