Eskom has announced that it will be moving to stage 2 load shedding on Thursday (16 April) from 18h00.<\/p>\n
The group issued the power alert over Twitter: “Eskom will move from stage 1 to stage 2 load shedding at 18h00 until 22h00 tonight.”<\/p>\n
South Africans have been experiencing load shedding all week, with the power utility moving to its highest stage – stage 3 – on at least two occasions.<\/p>\n
Stage 1 load shedding allows for 1000MW of power to be pulled off the grid, stage 2 makes provision for 2000MW, and stage 3 takes off 4000MW.<\/p>\n
At a media briefing on Wednesday Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown said Eskom only wanted to subject South Africans to a few hours of stage 3 load shedding, which is why it’s usually only implemented from 16h00 to 22h00 and not for the whole day.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere will be load shedding for the next two years,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is time for South Africans and the economy to adapt to the situation and find a way to save electricity and manage their productivity during the few hours of load shedding when it occurs.\u201d<\/p>\n
The minister also warned of more intensive load shedding in the coming winter months, where maintenance in winter is a deviation from the normal practice at Eskom.<\/p>\n
