A luxury lodge overlooking one of South Africa\u2019s most famous historic battlefields is going on auction, giving buyers a chance to own a property deeply connected to the country\u2019s past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isandlwana Lodge, located in KwaZulu-Natal, sits on the slopes above the site of the Battle of Isandlwana, one of the most significant clashes of the Anglo-Zulu War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The property, which offers direct views of the battlefield, will be auctioned<\/a> on 25 March by Broll Auctions and Sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The battle, fought on 22 January 1879, is widely regarded as one of the most consequential military engagements in southern African history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On that day, more than 20,000 Zulu warriors overwhelmed a British imperial camp in Natal, killing over 1,300 soldiers in a dramatic defeat for the British Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outcome forced Britain to reassess its military tactics during the campaign and cemented Isandlwana\u2019s place in South Africa\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the battlefield attracts historians, military scholars and travellers from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with nearby historic sites such as Rorke’s Drift, Blood River and Ulundi, the region forms one of the most visited heritage tourism corridors in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, roughly 40% of international tourists travel to experience culture, including heritage sites, museums and local traditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIsandlwana Lodge is unlike almost any other hospitality asset in South Africa, and with the rise of cultural tourism globally, its location is the asset,\u201d said Norman Raad, CEO of Broll Auctions and Sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lodge itself was designed to reflect the history and culture of the area. It is built from rock and thatch, and it made in the shape of a traditional Zulu shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The columns supporting the roof were sourced from the old West Street Pier in Durban, and each column is named after a Zulu commander or a key figure in the chain of command during the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Broll, the property is also built into the Nyoni mountainside, the same vantage point from which the Zulu commander Ntshingwayo is believed to have directed his forces during the battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since opening in 1999, the lodge has hosted a number of high-profile guests. It was officially opened by Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a descendant of Shaka, the founder of the Zulu kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years it has welcomed visitors including former US president Jimmy Carter, the late Zulu monarch Goodwill Zwelithini and members of several European royal families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located roughly a three-and-a-half-hour drive from King Shaka International Airport, the lodge offers guests a remote and immersive experience within the landscape where a defining chapter of regional history unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The property can accommodate up to 26 guests across 14 luxury en-suite bedrooms and is known for its classic South African hospitality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guests are served meals beside a fireplace while overlooking the surrounding mountains and historic plains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sale includes the lodge as a going concern, along with facilities such as a library, conference space, gym, curio shop and swimming pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also accommodation for management and staff, a 12-seater game vehicle used for heritage tours of the battlefield, a generator room and a borehole providing backup water supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raad said the property has already attracted attention from both local and international buyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt combines well-maintained hospitality infrastructure with a heritage setting that is impossible to replicate,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a rare convergence of tourism appeal, cultural significance and income-generating potential for the discerning investor or owner-operator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
