However, impacts are expected to be less severe than in KwaZulu-Natal.

Insurance experts have highlighted a growing risk to property from natural disasters, with extreme weather events becoming more frequent and costly.

Globally, natural disasters caused an estimated $320 billion in damages in 2024, with only about half of those losses insured.

South Africa has not been immune to these trends. Data from the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas shows that the country has experienced 111 severe national disasters over the past 40 years.

Weather forecast for today and tomorrow, 23-24 March 2026:
Partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread in KwaZulu Natal⚠️Severe thunderstorms, disruptive rain and damaging winds#saws #WorldMetDay #weatheroutlook #Warning pic.twitter.com/W5J60llyk7
— SA Weather Service (@SAWeatherServic) March 23, 2026

Increasing risk

The data also showed that the majority of these national disasters were linked to floods and storms.

Additionally, data shows that 35 national states of disaster have been declared over the past 12 years, with six occurring since 2020 due to events such as droughts, floods, and fires.

Industry reports, including the Santam Insurance Barometer, also show an increasing concern about climate-related risks.

Around 58% of personal lines brokers believe climate change is becoming a more significant threat to their clients, particularly in relation to weather-related damage.

Insurers have already reported a steady rise in claims linked to extreme weather, especially for flood damage, lightning-induced power surges, and hail damage affecting homes and vehicles.

For homeowners, the increase in national events makes it increasingly important to review household and business insurance cover.

Experts advise that policies that include protection against floods, hailstorms, and wind damage could prove critical as severe weather events become more frequent nationwide.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued another severe storm warning for several parts of the country.

[12755
853,21788
post-854613","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-property","tag-south-africa","tag-the-south-african-weather-service-saws
["GET
