{"id":855503,"date":"2026-04-01T07:11:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T05:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=855503"},"modified":"2026-04-01T10:40:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T08:40:34","slug":"us-tech-giant-from-silicon-valley-buys-r890-million-worth-of-land-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/855503\/us-tech-giant-from-silicon-valley-buys-r890-million-worth-of-land-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"US tech giant from Silicon Valley buys R890 million worth of land in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Global data-centre provider Equinix Inc. plans to build more facilities in South Africa as part of a R7.5 billion ($438 million) plan to capitalise on the continent\u2019s artificial-intelligence boom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nasdaq-listed firm, which opened its first data centre in Johannesburg in 2024, has bought more land in that city and also in Cape Town, totalling R890 million, Managing Director for South Africa Sandile Dube said in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have now secured 327,000 square meters of land and plan to build further data-centre capacity of 160 megawatts,\u201d said Dube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll investments are funded by our own balance sheet, and our intention is to do so with all of our future investments in South Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa\u2019s largest and most industrialised economy serves as a data-centre hub for the continent, accounting for about three-quarters of total regional capacity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft and Amazon.com have also announced significant investments in cloud and AI infrastructure in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The continent currently hosts about 409 megawatts of operational data-centre capacity, or less than 1% of the global total, according to BloombergNEF.
