{"id":855689,"date":"2026-04-03T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=855689"},"modified":"2026-04-02T18:55:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T16:55:02","slug":"another-country-issues-a-warning-to-its-citizens-travelling-to-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/855689\/another-country-issues-a-warning-to-its-citizens-travelling-to-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Another country issues a warning to its citizens travelling to South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New Zealand has joined the chorus of travel warnings to its citizens travelling to South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The warning comes even as South Africa continues to attract strong international tourism numbers, particularly during busy travel periods such as Easter and Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Department of Tourism\u2019s latest statistics, the country recorded 827,886 international tourist arrivals in April 2025, up 17.9% from the same month in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of South Africa\u2019s top 10 overseas source markets recorded growth, with Australia posting the biggest increase at 18.4%, while the United Kingdom remained the country\u2019s leading overseas source market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But behind the tourism recovery, foreign governments are continuing to caution travellers about the realities on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand currently has South Africa listed under a Level 2 advisory, urging travellers to \u201cexercise increased caution\u201d because of violent crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advisory warned that there are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand because of violent crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It added that there is a very high level of violent crime in South Africa, particularly in city centres and townships, and at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand\u2019s authorities warn that violent crime in South Africa can include \u201cmugging, murder, sexual assault, carjacking, armed robbery, and kidnapping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also noted that while most visitors have a safe trip, crime remains \u201ca serious risk, especially in city centres and townships.\u201d The advisory also stressed that the danger is significantly greater after dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand warned its travellers that carjacking and vehicle theft are common in South Africa and cautioned them to keep doors locked, windows up, and valuables hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also warned against stopping for broken-down vehicles, picking up hitchhikers, or blindly following GPS routes into unfamiliar areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travellers are also advised to avoid public transport, monitor local media for unrest, and be prepared for power outages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Zealand joins other countries <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OR-Tambo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OR-Tambo-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-855698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OR-Tambo-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OR-Tambo-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OR-Tambo-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OR-Tambo-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OR-Tambo-1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This warning from New Zealand follows similar warnings from other countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These countries all maintained elevated travel advisories for South Africa in March 2026.
