Load shedding is on the forefront of South Africans\u2019 minds once again, following Eskom\u2019s inability to provide the country with sufficient power over the past\u00a0week.<\/p>\n
While some are stocking up on candles, flashlights, and generator fuel, many South African\u2019s aren\u2019t affected by load shedding due to the area in which they live.<\/p>\n
The City of Cape Town\u2019s\u00a0mayoral committee member for utility services Ernest Sonnenberg recently provided some insight<\/strong><\/a> into why certain areas do not suffer from power cuts.<\/p>\n \u201cAs far as exclusions from load shedding are concerned, the city is guided by what is referred to as regulation NRS048-9,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is the national standard for load shedding and deals with the appropriate treatment of critical loads and the essential load requirements of various customers.\u201d<\/p>\n The regulation identifies\u00a0the following criteria for the implementation of load shedding: the safety of people, the environment, the potential damage to plants associated with a critical national product, and technical constraints on executing load shedding and curtailment or restoration.<\/p>\n MyBroadband contacted several\u00a0major municipalities in the country\u00a0to find out which areas and suburbs fell into this category.<\/p>\n The City of Tshwane and the City of Cape Town were the only municipalities to respond.<\/p>\n Tshwane\u2019s spokesperson said they were not \u201cin a position to give\u2026 such information\u201d, while Cape Town provided a detailed list of areas which fall under regulation\u00a0NRS048-9.<\/p>\n The following areas in Cape Town are not affected by load shedding.<\/p>\n This article was republished with permission from MyBroadband<\/a>.<\/p>\n Why Molefe was chosen to lead Eskom<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nWhich areas get the\u00a0NRS048-9 treatment?<\/h3>\n
