Hlumelo Nyaluza, founder of HN Luxury, designs handbags built to withstand a bullet, making them discreet weapons against violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Profits from the collection are used to empower survivors of gender-based violence by helping them start small businesses or providing resources to grow their existing ventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Growing up, I realised my purpose on earth, which is to empower other people through my imagination,” Nyaluza told Stephen Grootes on the Money Show<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HN Luxury founder started his empire from a dream he had around the age of 12, where he realised he wanted to inspire others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About a year or two ago, Nyaluza had a dream in which he imagined transforming the “hands” of a bag and making them disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, Nyaluza partnered with various artisans to ensure the ideas from his dreams became reality when he was awake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyaluza said that most of his ideas come to him in his dreams, around three o’clock in the morning when he is asleep. “Most of it is inspired by my purpose, and my tribe, which is the Xhosa tribe,” said Nyaluza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The designer explained that the monogram of the luxury bags is inspired by the Xhosa tribe, which was also an idea from his dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want them to stand out, and I want them to know that Africans can create beautiful things, especially with the fact that the main manufacturer that we’re working with is an African, French-trained craftsman,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So that’s one of the reasons why the bags are so beautiful. I had to go through twenty artisans over a year to find the perfect one.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bulletproof designer bags<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The bulletproof designer handbags were inspired by a real-life break-in at Nyaluza’s home in Soweto, where the robber was armed with a gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hence, I decided to create a luxury bag that is bulletproof, and it was just shot at by a South African champion shooter, and the bullet didn’t go through three times,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyaluza said the bulletproof bags, including handbags and backpacks, are surprisingly light, despite the use of Kevlar\u2014a lightweight, strong, synthetic, heat-resistant fibre used to block bullets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HN brand had grown 100% by January 2026, which Nyaluza said is driven by the desire and demand in the market for an “investment piece” type of handbag. The premium bags have a sign art embroidered that is presented in a “gallery-type manner.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The luxury handbag founder believes that, because art is incorporated into the design, the bags should appreciate, as fine art does in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So obviously a bag that you can buy now, let’s say, for R9,000 or R10,000, maybe in the next two years, is going to be worth around R30,000 and maybe even more in the next ten years as the brand keeps growing,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“HN Hlumelo Nyaluza Luxury Bags could be the African answer to Herm\u00e8s,” said Nyaluza. “I am proud to say that the HN luxury bags are proudly made in South Africa.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vision of HN Luxury is to become Africa\u2019s first global ultra-luxury brand, renowned for its exceptional design and craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We aim to showcase the beauty of African creativity and allow the world to experience our heritage, hope, and grace through timeless design.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collection features the Signature Premium Box Bag, which showcases original fine art by African artists, an HN Backpack, and the newest addition, the Bulletproof Shield Bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
