{"id":85992,"date":"2015-04-26T08:46:39","date_gmt":"2015-04-26T06:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=85992"},"modified":"2015-04-26T08:46:39","modified_gmt":"2015-04-26T06:46:39","slug":"government-renews-call-for-state-controlled-media-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/85992\/government-renews-call-for-state-controlled-media-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Government renews call for state-controlled media regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Communications Minister Faith Muthambi is leading a fresh\u00a0campaign to regulate and &#8220;transform&#8221; the media in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by the City Press, Muthambi has\u00a0called for action to introduce a regulatory system in print media to &#8220;achieve the meaningful transformation agenda&#8221; of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The process would involve a renewed parliamentary inquiry into media regulation, which she would participate in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to come up with a more balanced and acceptable regime within the industry,&#8221; said Muthambi.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2014, following her appointment as head of the newly-structured department of communications &#8211; dubbed the &#8220;department of propaganda&#8221; by opposition parties &#8211; Muthambi said she\u00a0would force change and transformation in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The call was for &#8220;revolution&#8221;, part of which was to &#8220;force the media to transform like all other parts of society.
