{"id":86032,"date":"2015-04-28T10:59:05","date_gmt":"2015-04-28T08:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=86032"},"modified":"2015-05-20T08:43:49","modified_gmt":"2015-05-20T06:43:49","slug":"white-men-still-the-best-off-for-jobs-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/86032\/white-men-still-the-best-off-for-jobs-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"White men still the best off for jobs in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While employment conditions remain tough for all South Africans, it is black women who remain the most challenged demographic in the country when it comes to jobs &#8211; while white men remain in the best position.<\/p>\n<p>According to Stats SA&#8217;s employment data for 2014, women lose out to men\u00a0when it comes to employment across all racial demographics.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that labour market conditions in South Africa improved following the economic crisis, with the total number of employed persons increasing between 2008 and 2014 &#8211; from 14.6 million to 15.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>However, the number of unemployed persons also increased &#8211; from 4.3 million to 5.1 million\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0resulting in an\u00a0increase in the unemployment rate from 22.5% in 2008 to 25.1% in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at population groups split by gender, overall female unemployment rates are far higher than those of men &#8211; although the gap has narrowed over the period, still in favour of men.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, unemployment rates for men were recorded at 19.8%, while 25.9% of women were unemployed &#8211; a gap of 6.1 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, unemployment rates increased for both men and women to 23.3% and 27.2%, respectively, though the gap narrowed to 3.9 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting the vulnerability of women in the South African labour market, female\u00a0labour absorption and labour force participation rates are also lower than those of men for all population groups.<\/p>\n<p>The rate for black African women, at 30.4% in both 2008 and 2014, remains higher than that of men and women in the other population groups by a wide margin.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_86036\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2008.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86036\" class=\"wp-image-86036\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2008.png\" alt=\"Male vs Female Unemployment 2008\" width=\"600\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2008.png 904w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2008-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2008-140x102.png 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-86036\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Male vs Female Unemployment 2008<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_86034\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2014.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86034\" class=\"wp-image-86034\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2014.png\" alt=\"Male vs Female Unemployment 2014\" width=\"600\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2014.png 904w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2014-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Male-vs-Female-Unemplyment-2014-140x102.png 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-86034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Male vs Female Unemployment 2014<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Every population group saw unemployment rates increase between 2008 and 2014, except for Indian\/Asian women who saw a decline in unemployment from 14.3% to 13.1%<\/p>\n<p>White males are still the most employed demographic in the country, where the unemployment rate sits at 6.7%. This is up from 2008&#8217;s rate of 3.4%.<\/p>\n<p>This leap is not as big as that of coloured men, where unemployment increased 5.4 percentage points to 23.1%, and coloured women, which saw the unemployment rate climb 4.8 percentage points to 25%.<\/p>\n<p>Gender disparities also\u00a0exist in terms of access to benefits.
