{"id":860478,"date":"2026-05-15T10:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T08:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=860478"},"modified":"2026-05-15T10:18:35","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T08:18:35","slug":"south-africans-face-cost-of-living-crisis-but-there-is-a-solution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/860478\/south-africans-face-cost-of-living-crisis-but-there-is-a-solution\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africans face cost of living crisis \u2013 but there is a solution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>2026 has been a tumultuous year economically, with major fuel price and electricity tariff increases headlining the list of challenges South Africans face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many South Africans are taking out bad debt to manage their financial difficulties \u2013 but this is digging them deeper into their financial hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing more people relying on debt to carry them through these economic times,\u201d said Neil Roets, founder and CEO of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/debtrescue.co.za\/?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_term=May+2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Debt Rescue<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are doing this through various forms of debt \u2013 credit cards, store cards, and some retailers are even giving out credit to buy groceries with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If people are relying on debt to pay for their day-to-day expenses, they will find themselves in a tough financial predicament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to avoid bad debt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Roets, the easiest way to avoid falling into a bad debt scenario is to have a budget in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This ensures you know exactly where your money is going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s concerning to see how many people don\u2019t know what is going on in their finances,\u201d said Roets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou must run your own finances like you are running a business. That is why having a budget is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a budget also helps you determine why you are not going to make it in a specific month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAsk yourself: \u2018is my problem a once-off thing, like a car breaking down?
