{"id":86116,"date":"2015-05-02T12:00:32","date_gmt":"2015-05-02T10:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=86116"},"modified":"2015-05-02T12:35:49","modified_gmt":"2015-05-02T10:35:49","slug":"the-500-worst-passwords-in-the-world-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/86116\/the-500-worst-passwords-in-the-world-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"The 500 worst passwords in the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In his book Knowledge is Beautiful, David McCandless has collected infographics spanning all kinds of subject matter to visually display the\u00a0data we are bombarded with on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>The infographics\u00a0can be seen\u00a0on his website\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationisbeautiful.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Information is Beautiful<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the infographics of relevance to most Internet users is\u00a0the 500 most popular English language passwords.<\/p>\n<p>Styled like a scatter graph, passwords are sorted alphabetically from left to right \u2013 with those closer to the top the most popular and the\u00a0variation in text size indicating password strength.<\/p>\n<p>The graphic shows that traditionally weak passwords, such as &#8220;12345678&#8221;, &#8220;password&#8221; and &#8220;qwerty&#8221; remain the most used passwords, though their strength is severely lacking.<\/p>\n<p>Other commonly used passwords, such as &#8220;abc123&#8221; and &#8220;trustno1&#8221;, however, appear to be stronger thanks to the character and number combinations, despite their apparent overuse.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_86122\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Passwords.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86122\" class=\"wp-image-86122\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Passwords.png\" alt=\"Passwords\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Passwords.png 1260w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Passwords-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Passwords-1024x725.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-86122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Passwords infographic<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The infographic shows that passwords close to the top of the list can be rated as \u201cstronger\u201d than those lower down by algorithms that measure password strength.<\/p>\n<p>One could argue that users might easily be given a false sense of security about their passwords, even though simple hacks could guess them.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a section on\u00a0the most common password categories.
