{"id":861263,"date":"2026-05-31T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=861263"},"modified":"2026-05-29T14:00:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T12:00:34","slug":"takealots-one-big-advantage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/861263\/takealots-one-big-advantage\/","title":{"rendered":"Takealot&#8217;s one big advantage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Takealot&#8217;s latest data shows that shoppers across the country are shopping in the early hours of the morning, which is a key advantage for the e-commerce site over traditional retail that operates during the day.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takealot has released a series of data on its customers&#8217; shopping habits as part of its 15th birthday celebration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;15 years ago, we set out to make online shopping accessible to every South African,&#8221; said Karla<br>Levick, Chief Marketing Officer at Takealot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today, with millions of people browsing our platform annually, we don&#8217;t just serve the South African shopper; we understand them better than anyone.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last year, the company has seen over 5 million shoppers, 1 billion product searches, and 174 million kilometres delivered, equivalent to 22,730 laps around South Africa&#8217;s border. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These aren&#8217;t just metrics, they&#8217;re millions of individual decisions that, when aggregated, tell us the story of a nation&#8217;s needs, wants, and aspirations,&#8221; Levick added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takealot&#8217;s data showed that the top 10 search terms across its customers were primarily related to technology: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>iPhone \u2013 15 million+ searches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Baby &#8211; 8.5 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laptop \u2013 5 million+<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smart TV &#8211; 5 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Samsung Phones &#8211; 5 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hairdryer &#8211; 4.5 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Airfryer special deals 4 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coffee table &#8211; 3.5 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lego \u2013 3.5 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fridges &#8211; 3 million<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Takealot said that search data reveals key insights into South Africa&#8217;s consumer behaviour, with shoppers prioritising essential and aspirational products and home improvement categories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takealot&#8217;s data also showed that many South Africans are making use of the 24\/7 nature of online shopping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Naspers-owned company said that Gauteng dominates midnight shopping, followed by the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early morning hours, 2 to 4 AM, digital products, particularly mobile airtime and voucher-led purchases, which reflected South Africans&#8217; need for instant connectivity at all hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geographic analysis also revealed distinct regional preferences, with Gauteng shoppers leading in wellness and personal care categories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takealot said that KZN shows a strong preference for home comfort categories, including small appliances, audio accessories, and snack foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Limpopo also demonstrated a higher-than-average interest in large appliances, entertainment technology, such as large-screen televisions, and outdoor recreation equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At-home delivery is not for everyone <\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/takealot-trucks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/takealot-trucks-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-831132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/takealot-trucks-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/takealot-trucks-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/takealot-trucks-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/takealot-trucks.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Takealot added that the nation&#8217;s diverse socioeconomic landscape is reflected in fulfilment preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Takealot&#8217;s nationwide network of Pickup Points processed over 1 million orders at its top five locations alone. Richmond Park in Cape Town had the highest number, followed by Midrand&#8217;s N1 Bridge.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suburban areas show major splits, with affluent neighbourhoods favouring doorstep delivery.
