Peter Wharton-Hood was appointed Group Chief Executive of the Life Healthcare Group in September 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1965, Wharton-Hood earned his Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1989. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before becoming CEO of Life Healthcare Group, Wharton-Hood was the Group COO and Deputy CEO at Standard Bank Group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also served as Chief Executive and Chief Country Officer for Deutsche Bank in South Africa and as Global COO at Deutsche Bank in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1989, Wharton-Hood entered the business world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1992, after a brief stint as an articled clerk at PwC, he joined Edcon, a large clothing retailer based in Johannesburg, as Group Finance Executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a 2021 interview<\/a>, Wharton-Hood shared insights about his career with Harvard Business School’s Euvin Naidoo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After spending five years at Edcon, he joined Standard Bank in 1997, starting as the Finance Director of Standard Corporate and Merchant Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, he advanced through various roles, eventually becoming the Head of the Group\u2019s African Operations and the Chief Executive of Global Personal and Business Banking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wharton-Hood said that when he joined Standard Bank in 1997, it was viewed as a “sleeping giant,” ranking last among South Africa’s major banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2006, Standard Bank expanded into Argentina by acquiring the local affiliate of BankBoston, which had recently been purchased by Bank of America just as Argentina was beginning to recover from one of its periodic crises. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said this decision was based on the bank’s experience in Africa, which demonstrated that banks positioned strategically during post-crisis periods can be highly profitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2013, Wharton-Hood left Standard Bank to join Deutsche Bank as Chief Executive and Chief Country Officer for South Africa, and later held various other titles. He eventually rose to the position of Global Chief Operating Officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Wharton-Hood was appointed Chief Executive of Life Healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its latest remuneration report, Life Healthcare’s Wharton-Hood earned a single-figure remuneration of R55.107 million, which works out to R4.59 million a month or R151,000 a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His salary comprises a base salary (R9.6 million), dividends received (R7.5 million), performance incentives of R16.8 million, vesting of long-term incentives (R14 million), matching share 2nd vesting (R4.6 million), and other payments of R2 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life Healthcare Group is set to open a new hospital in Paarl in the Western Cape, with the group committing R722 million in capital expenditure in the six months ending March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life Paarl Valley Hospital will open its doors in the second half of 2027. The new acute hospital will have 140 beds and will have a lodge-style setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life Paarl Valley Hospital is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in the second half of 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital is located on the corner of Fraaigelegen Road and the R301 between Paarl and Franschhoek, between Boschenmeer Golf and Val de Vie Lifestyle estates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital will also include a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, which will be the only cardiac facility in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the new hospital, the group is also working on several expansion projects at existing facilities across its portfolio, as highlighted in its interim results for the six months ending March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These include additional acute beds and specialised facilities, \u201cdesigned to respond to the shifting disease profiles and growing demand for complex care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group said that it has continued to expand its complementary services by improving high-demand offerings in acute rehabilitation, advanced diagnostic imaging, and renal dialysis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life Healthcare reported progress on its cyclotron infrastructure investment. These initiatives aim to support a more \u201cintegrated, patient-centred care model\u201d and increase access to specialised services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
