{"id":862211,"date":"2026-06-02T11:50:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T09:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=862211"},"modified":"2026-06-02T11:50:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T09:50:49","slug":"47-year-old-cape-town-shopping-mall-built-on-a-train-station-getting-a-huge-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/property\/862211\/47-year-old-cape-town-shopping-mall-built-on-a-train-station-getting-a-huge-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"47-year-old Cape Town shopping mall built on a train station getting a huge upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Golden Acre Shopping Centre is undergoing a massive renovation, with the Cape Town icon looking to modernise its offering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre was opened in the Mother City in 1979 and was built on the site of the original train station, forming a crucial link between the CBD and its major public transport systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serving the city bowl, the mall now offers a blend of food, fashion, services, and essential stores. Popular tenants at the mall include Shoprite, Ackermans, Foschini, Wimpy, McDonald&#8217;s, Steers and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly before the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the Grand Parade Shopping Centre was incorporated into Golden Acre, adding many new stores and fast-food restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combining Grand Parade with Golden Acre added 10,461 square meters of general lettable area and 22,000 square meters of office space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/property\/812264\/iconic-cape-town-shopping-mall-getting-sold\/\">In early 2025<\/a>, the Competition Commission then approved the deal where Putirex and 11 Adderley Properties would buy Golden Acre and Grand Parade from the Paramount Property Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mall has started a new multi-phase redevelopment project aimed at &#8220;modernising, refreshing, and elevating the shopping experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This forms part of a carefully planned three-year redevelopment programme that will enhance key areas of the centre while ensuring we remain open and trading throughout the journey,&#8221; it said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The redevelopment is focused on several key initiatives: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creating a more modern and welcoming environment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improving customer flow and accessibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhancing the overall look and feel of the centre <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating upgraded spaces to better serve shoppers and tenants <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Future-proofing Golden Acre for the next generation <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This investment reflects our long-term commitment to the Cape Town CBD and the community that supports us,&#8221; it said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All trading stores are continuing to welcome customers, and updated wayfinding signage is also in place to assist customers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first major phase of the mall&#8217;s redevelopment is on the Piazza Level, which started in February this year and is expected to take a year to complete. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While there may be some inconvenience along the way, we&#8217;re confident the transformation will deliver a significantly enhanced and more vibrant space once complete.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Architecture firm SVA International designed the shopping centre&#8217;s upgrades, with construction being handled by GVK-Siya Zama Building Contractors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2
