{"id":862717,"date":"2026-06-27T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-27T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=862717"},"modified":"2026-06-26T16:06:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T14:06:09","slug":"people-working-a-9-to-5-job-in-south-africa-are-in-deep-trouble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/862717\/people-working-a-9-to-5-job-in-south-africa-are-in-deep-trouble\/","title":{"rendered":"People working a 9-to-5 job in South Africa are in deep trouble"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Recent statistics indicate that four out of five South Africans worry about money most of the time, with financial stress reportedly damaging focus, energy and motivation at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOrganisations are asking people to produce more, adapt faster, and carry a heavier cognitive load than they were three years ago,\u201d said fintech company Wealthbit CEO Alex Cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the World Economic Forum\u2019s 2025 Future of Jobs Report, 40% of employers worldwide anticipate reducing their workforce in areas where artificial intelligence can automate tasks.\u00a0 Meanwhile, 53% of leaders are prioritising efforts to enhance productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers incur high costs due to absenteeism and presenteeism, totalling R250 billion per year. Additionally, replacement costs can range from 50% to 200% of an employee&#8217;s annual salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEmployees who understand how to manage their money are more likely to engage with retirement planning, make informed medical aid choices, and access employee assistance programmes (EAPs) support before crisis point,\u201d said Cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cook told <a href=\"https:\/\/iono.fm\/e\/1683159\">Moneyweb Radio<\/a> that while the resources allocated towards benefits by companies are making a difference, they are still not addressing the main issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we are finding is that individuals are spending an enormous amount on debt, and gambling is becoming more and more prevalent,\u201d Cook said in the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that an interesting finding is that this concept applies not only to the lower end of the workforce but to 80% of the workforce, which means that the majority of the country\u2019s workforce is under financial pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we have seen has helped is where people are able to put systems in place in their personal lives that make their situation better; it\u2019s about a systematic approach to making it better rather than episodic type intervention,\u201d said Cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that many people are starting to look for alternative employment and jobs that offer even a small pay increase, indicating they are nearing breaking point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common employee benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-2026-06-05T155734.020.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-2026-06-05T155734.020-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-862817\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-2026-06-05T155734.020-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-2026-06-05T155734.020-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-2026-06-05T155734.020-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-2026-06-05T155734.020-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-2026-06-05T155734.020.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wealthbit CEO Alex Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Wealthbit, most formal employers offer medical aid; however, only about 15% of South Africa\u2019s population has coverage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, the premiums for most medical aids increased by 9.3% to 12.8%, which is roughly three times the inflation rate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This rise in premiums means that either employers or employees must absorb these additional costs, contributing to the financial pressures they are already facing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While medical aid provides protection against catastrophic health expenses, it does not alleviate the day-to-day financial burdens that employees experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, Wealthbit indicated that the widening gap between premium costs and the services covered is a significant source of stress for employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retirement funding is widely available in the formal employment sector; however, only 42% of members feel confident that they are saving enough for their retirement.
