South Africa’s rand weakened on Friday as domestic markets digested \u200ba fall in foreign reserves last \u200cmonth, while U.S.-Iran peace talks kept sentiment cautious and inflation concerns in focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday afternoon, the rand traded at 16.40 against the dollar, about 0.5% down from its previous close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa’s international liquidity fell to $73.47 billion at \u2060the end of May from $73.76 billion in \u200bApril, central bank data showed on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. \u200bdollar was up against a basket of currencies, while oil prices stabilised after Oman said operations at its Mina \u200bal Fahal port were proceeding normally, following \u200ba Reuters report of disruption after an explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a net \u200cfuel \u2060importer, South Africa is heavily exposed to the spike in global energy prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next week, domestically focused investors will look to the statistics agency’s \u200brelease of \u200bgross domestic \u2060product figures on Tuesday for clues on the health of Africa’s \u200blargest economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other releases include current account, \u200bmining\u00a0\u00a0\u2060and manufacturing\u00a0data on Thursday. On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index was down 0.6%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa’s benchmark \u20602035 \u200bgovernment bond weakened, with the \u200byield up 13 basis points to 8.68%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The credit assessor upgraded the country’s rating by one level to BB, which is two levels below investment grade. It said that the outlook was stable. This was the second credit upgrade for the nation, following a similar move from S&P in 2025 [Bloomberg<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eskom losing its grip<\/strong>: Eskom\u2019s contribution to South Africa\u2019s electricity supply likely dropped to roughly 80% in 2025, with the remainder of the power coming from other sources, likely private generation.
