In both cases, however, the recoveries are still positive.

Even though this will result in a smaller cut at the pumps, Bishop said any cut will help with inflation.

“A declining, as opposed to increasing, fuel price is positive for inflation, while a 25bp hike in the repo rate is expected for July, which will further support the domestic currency,” she said.

The rand has been resilient against the US dollar, despite volatile conditions in the Middle East.

The local unit has been supported by a credit rating upgrade from ratings firm Fitch and better-than-expected Q1 2026 GDP numbers from Stats SA.

These are the recoveries at 9 June:

<ul Botes, Managing Director at Citadel Global, oil markets are experiencing downward pressure after Iran and Israel halted their attacks on each other.

Iran and Israel agreed to halt strikes on each other following a flare-up that saw both countries launch waves of ballistic missiles.

US President Donald Trump has talked up an interim agreement to end the war that began when the US and Israel started bombing Iran in February.

A ceasefire has been in place for about two months, but sporadic fighting among the US, Iran and Israel has continued, underscoring the risk of a return to full-scale war in the absence of a lasting peace deal.

According to Botes, this remains a volatile point, with markets on edge given the fragile backdrop.

Nevertheless, the ceasefire sent oil prices down to $93/barrel and down about 3% from its earlier highs this week.

Combined with the rand stabilising around R16.45/$, both sides of the fuel price equation are pushing over-recoveries, pointing to a R1.10 per litre cut coming next month, when factoring in the re-added
