The rand remained stable on Wednesday following the release of US inflation data, which met expectations. The rand was trading at 16.52 against the dollar, just slightly off its previous close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, US consumer inflation rose at its fastest rate in three years, spurred by the Middle East conflict, which drove up petrol and other energy prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This situation provided additional support for the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates unchanged until 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 4.2% over the 12 months leading up to May, aligning with economists’ forecasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like other risk-sensitive currencies, the rand often responds to global factors, such as US monetary policy and economic data, as well as domestic reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, South Africa’s central bank indicated that the country’s financial system is likely to remain resilient despite tighter financial conditions and monetary policy arising from the conflict with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US dollar was last traded about 0.2% weaker against a basket of currencies, while oil prices increased after President Donald Trump criticised Iran in a post on Truth Social, following a series of tit-for-tat strikes between the US and Iran overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index fell by 1.5%, partly due to losses in mining stocks. South Africa’s benchmark government bond for 2035 remained flat with a yield of 8.63%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, 11 June 2026, the rand was trading at R16.52 to the dollar, R22.12 to the pound, and R19.08 to the euro. Gold is trading lower at $4,084.5 an ounce, while oil prices were at $94.43 a barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
