South African company that is turning old vehicle tyres into fuel

GeT Metal Group has introduced a process that transforms approximately 150,000 waste tyres each year into industrial fuel, removing the need for virgin fossil fuels in its aluminium recycling furnaces.

GeT Alloys, a South African aluminium recycler, processes around 350 million used beverage cans, packaging items, and post-consumer scraps annually, turning them into aluminium ingots.

This new initiative has allowed the GeT Alloys facility to replace its previous monthly use of 120,000 litres of conventional heavy fuel oil (HFO) with fuel derived from tyres.

According to GeT Alloys, this fuel is produced through a controlled, oxygen-free thermal conversion process that changes the chemical composition of the waste tyres.

In an effort to close the loop, carbon black, which is a byproduct of the tyre waste-to-energy process, is captured and used in GeT Alloys’ aluminium dross recovery operations.

Additionally, steel wire recovered during the tyre conversion is kept and utilised by the GeT Metal Group.

This material is provided as feedstock to GeT Steel, the group’s steel foundry located in Atlantis Industrial, where it is integrated into the production of steel billets for both the South African and export markets.

Through this initiative, GeT Alloys also diverts around 12,500 waste tyres each month from landfills, stockpiles, and poorly managed dump sites.

“Before launching this initiative, our facility required massive volumes of conventional furnace oil to sustain our melting operations,” said GeT Metal Group director Andrew Bishop.

“By engineering a solution that transforms a problematic waste stream into a valuable manufacturing input, we have eliminated the use of virgin fossil fuels in our primary furnaces.”

He said that this shows that heavy industry can successfully decouple production from fossil fuels through smart engineering.

By replacing 1.44 million litres of conventional heavy fuel oil (HFO) each year, this initiative is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 720 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

These savings are calculated using internationally recognised emission factors that align with the methodologies of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the GHG Protocol.

The reduction in emissions reflects the avoidance of substantial upstream emissions associated with crude oil extraction, refining, and fuel transportation.

“Building this sustainable value-chain from collection to processing has allowed us to create 32 direct jobs across the recycling and manufacturing sectors, driving local economic development when it is needed most,” said GeT Metal Group director Ebrahim Khan.

GeT Metal Group

<figure
