We have a very sophisticated system,\u201d said Buckham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that despite the noise surrounding digital disruption and cryptocurrency adoption, the underlying foundation of South Africa&#8217;s banking sector is incredibly robust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buckham noted that many perceptions of declining trust originate from international events rather than local realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople take it for granted how much they actually trust the system, but we\u2019re infected with this imported narrative of distrust,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-863970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because public sentiment around banking is often shaped by the legacy of the global financial crisis and high-profile failures in overseas markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, South Africa\u2019s banking industry successfully navigated the global financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, economic volatility, and extensive regulatory change while continuing to provide stability to customers and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resilience and digital adoption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Avery, who has observed the evolution of the Beyond Banking conference over several years, echoed this sentiment of a deeply resilient local industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur banks are very well capitalised, very well run and managed, and that certainly has remained constant since the first conference four years ago,\u201d said Avery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-863972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs2-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gibs2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He also unpacked the benefits of digital adoption and banking the unbanked through initiatives like Payshap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is important because, as digital adoption improves, countries experience significant GDP growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt means a spaza shop owner or a micro-entrepreneur who transacts digitally can approach a bank and maybe get a bridging loan or working capital finance assistance,\u201d said Avery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd all of that means greater economic inclusion, greater economic growth, and a growth of the pie for everyone in the ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The value of industry collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Buckham emphasised that the value of the Beyond Banking Conference lies in its ability to bring together regulators and industry leaders in one environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeyond banking, to me, means beyond traditional banking,\u201d said Buckham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhere banks are embracing AI, they&#8217;re embracing change. That&#8217;s good for us as a business, it&#8217;s good for the economy, and it&#8217;s good for growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buckham concluded that the Beyond Banking conference is important thanks to the quality of its attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the room each year, the major players from across the industry gather to engage directly on the difficult questions facing the sector \u2013 all
