{"id":864722,"date":"2026-06-26T09:38:54","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T07:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=864722"},"modified":"2026-06-26T09:38:57","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T07:38:57","slug":"standard-bank-now-authorised-to-clear-chinese-currency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/864722\/standard-bank-now-authorised-to-clear-chinese-currency\/","title":{"rendered":"Standard Bank now authorised to clear Chinese currency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Standard Bank has announced that it has been jointly authorised, along with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Limited (ICBC), to clear Renminbi (RMB) in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard Bank said it is the first African-based bank to receive this authorisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Renminbi is the official name of China&#8217;s currency, issued by the People&#8217;s Bank of China. The units of account are more commonly referred to as Yuan, but both refer to the same currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2025, Standard Bank became the first on the continent to be authorised to participate in China\u2019s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CIPS enables interbank payments between Africa and China using the Chinese RMB as the underpinning currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard Bank and ICBC will operate jointly as the \u201cRenminbi Clearing Bank of Africa\u201d with operational capacity to clear RMB in 19 African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Renminbi Clearing Bank of Africa is the first RMB clearing bank named after a continent and the first to be jointly operated by two commercial banks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leveraging ICBC\u2019s leading RMB capabilities and Standard Bank Group\u2019s strong African network, the clearing bank will serve as a core hub for RMB business across Africa, significantly enhancing the efficiency of RMB fund flows for various market participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RMB Clearing Bank status provides exclusive access to China\u2019s onshore financial system, including access to capital markets, liquidity, and payments innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This new service will provide our clients with transparent, efficient and cost-effective payment solutions between China and Africa,&#8221; said Standard Bank&#8217;s corporate and investment operations lead, Richard de Roos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will support trade and investment between the various economies, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the latest edition of the Standard Bank Africa Trade Barometer, cross-border trade preferences among businesses in the 10 African markets surveyed have shifted notably. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asian countries are now the preferred partners for an average of 35% of respondents, up from 24% in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China continues to dominate as the leading source of inputs, cited by 67% of surveyed businesses, with competitive pricing, product variety, and supply chain reliability highlighted as the key drivers of this preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChina is Africa\u2019s largest export market, and with clearer status added to CIPS participation, Standard Bank is even better placed to support Africa\u2019s trade with China,&#8221; de Roos said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We expect demand for these services to continue to expand.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Standard Bank has announced a new joint operation with China&#8217;s ICBC, now authorised to clear payments in Chinese Renminbi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":855603,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[961],"tags":[25659,25658,499],"class_list":["post-864722","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-banking","tag-icbc","tag-renminbi","tag-standard-bank"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/864722","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=864722"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/864722\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":864723,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/864722\/revisions\/864723"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/855603"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=864722"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=864722"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=864722"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
