The rand remained stable on Monday as investors awaited a series of month-end economic data to assess South Africa’s economic outlook, along with planned anti-immigration protests for Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rand was trading at 16.4626 to the dollar, a slight increase from its previous close. The dollar showed little movement against a basket of currencies, while oil prices rose on Monday following a series of tit-for-tat strikes between the US and Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These events highlighted the fragility of their interim peace deal and further hindered energy shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the domestic front, investors are keeping an eye on upcoming reports, including South Africa’s money supply, private sector credit, the central bank’s inflation expectations survey, and data on the trade balance and budget balance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ETM Analytics noted that these indicators might be overshadowed by Tuesday’s anti-immigration protests, where demonstrators are urging undocumented migrants to leave. This situation has been flagged as the main short-term risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index was last reported up by 0.1%. However, South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond weakened, with the yield rising by 3.5 basis points to 8.22%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, 30 June 2026, the rand was trading at R16.44 to the dollar, R21.76 to the pound, and R18.74 to the euro. Gold is trading lower at $3,989.26 an ounce, while oil prices were at $72.44 a barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
