{"id":865641,"date":"2026-07-07T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=865641"},"modified":"2026-07-07T12:15:05","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T10:15:05","slug":"sars-clarifies-new-mandatory-travel-rule-for-people-entering-or-leaving-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/865641\/sars-clarifies-new-mandatory-travel-rule-for-people-entering-or-leaving-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"SARS clarifies new mandatory travel rule for people entering or leaving South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has stressed that, while its newly implemented online travel declaration form is mandatory, travellers won&#8217;t be denied entry into or departure from South Africa if it hasn&#8217;t been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, these travellers will be directed by SARS Customs officials to self-service declaration terminals to complete the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1 July 2026, all travellers entering or leaving South Africa through air, land, sea and rail ports of entry are required to submit an online traveller declaration before travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SARS said the system has been implemented to strengthen data integration and enhance the monitoring, analysis, and reporting of cross-border activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It operates through the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) and follows a trial period launched back in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the system, all travellers must now submit the online declaration no more than 24 hours before departing from the country from which they are travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In SARS&#8217; initial announcement of the rule change, the question of what happens if a traveller cannot complete the online form in time was left buried in its FAQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, the revenue service said that travellers who experience a systems failure, a lack of internet access, or &#8220;another reasonable ground&#8221; would be assisted at the port of entry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In limited cases, a paper declaration may still be used,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its subsequent update, the tax service clarified that no one would be turned away for failing to complete the online form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Travellers will not be denied entry into or departure from South Africa solely because they have not completed a declaration before arriving at a port of entry,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;SARS Customs officials, supported by self-service declaration terminals, will be available to assist travellers who were unable to submit their declarations before travelling.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SARS said it encourages all travellers to familiarise themselves with the new requirements and complete their declarations in advance to ensure a seamless and efficient travel experience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SARS has clarified a point of concern with its new mandatory &#8216;travel pass&#8217; rules.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":708392,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":true,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"posted","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"2074448604064796843","_sma_x_attempts":1,"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[25761,3246,25760],"class_list":["post-865641","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-customs","tag-sars","tag-travel-rules"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/865641","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=865641"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/865641\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":865642,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/865641\/revisions\/865642"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/708392"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=865641"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=865641"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=865641"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
