The project is designed and operated by ecosystem restoration company Imperative.

The first phase will cover 10,000 hectares and involves 30 million spekboom plants, which has been underway since April 2024. Amazon’s funding will allow the programme to expand by more than 50,000 additional hectares.

Unlike many restoration projects that rely on planting trees, this initiative focuses on spekboom, an indigenous succulent that is naturally adapted to the Eastern Cape’s dry conditions.

Spekboom can be planted from cuttings placed directly into the soil, making large-scale restoration practical.

Scientists have found that spekboom removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at rates comparable to young tropical forests.

As it grows, it improves soil quality, restores moisture and creates conditions for native grasses, shrubs and trees to return, helping revive ecosystems that have deteriorated over decades.

The restoration area currently supports 165 recorded plant and animal species, including several regarded as vulnerable.

The programme is also expected to generate significant economic benefits. Amazon said the project could create around 11,000 jobs by 2030 while providing training for local businesses involved in ecological restoration.

Just under two million tonnes of carbon dioxide are to be removed from the atmosphere

Amazon’s spekboom nursery is just outside the town of Jansenville, Eastern Cape.

The investment is also expected to inject more than $500 million (R8 billion) into surrounding communities through wages, procurement, landowner payments, and community investment.

In an interview with 702 Drive, environmental lawyer Ricky Stone from Cullinan & Associates said the project represents far more than a large-scale conservation effort.

Stone described the initiative as “a very exciting project” because Amazon has committed to purchasing the carbon credits generated by the restoration work.

He said this provides financial certainty for landowners and project developers in a market where demand has traditionally been uncertain.

“A farmer restores degraded vegetation using plants such as spekboom, but then has no guaranteed buyers,” Stone said. Amazon’s commitment changes that by guaranteeing demand for the project’s credits.

He noted that the programme is expected to remove just under two million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reflects a growing trend among technology companies investing in nature-based carbon removal.

“We’re seeing more and more capital, especially from tech companies,” Stone said. He explained that growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence and large data centres is encouraging companies to invest in environmental restoration.

“This is Amazon’s way of offsetting a significant carbon footprint on their own books,” he said. Stone also believes South Africa has significant long-term potential in nature-based carbon markets.

“I absolutely see major potential, especially for South Africa. The country has a mega opportunity to develop biodiversity-focused carbon credit systems that reflect its unique ecosystems rather than relying solely on international models,” he said.

He added that while Amazon’s project has attracted attention because of its scale, several smaller restoration projects are already operating in the Eastern Cape, creating jobs and new income opportunities through carbon and biodiversity credits.

Stone said spekboom was selected because extensive scientific research has demonstrated its ability to capture and store carbon dioxide.

“The science behind spekboom has been studied extensively in South Africa,” he said, adding that the carbon removal achieved by the project will be independently verified under international standards.

The project has already received an “AA.pre” rating from independent carbon ratings agency BeZero Carbon, placing it among the highest-rated restoration projects globally for the expected quality of its carbon credits.

One of the world’s most valuable companies with a market value of about $2.6 trillion (R42.6 trillion), has announced plans to invest $500 million (about R8 billion) in South Africa.

[9872
657,18622,853
post-865690","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-amazon","tag-eastern-cape","tag-south-africa
["GET
