Reginald Demana has resigned as the CEO of Sanral, having overseen the closure of the controversial e-toll system in Gauteng. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demana is leaving his role to take up a new opportunity that aligns with his long-term career ambitions. He will remain in his role until the end of August 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took over in January 2023. Demana joined Sanral as CEO in January 2023 with a mandate to accelerate the development of key national road corridor infrastructure projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He oversaw the resolution of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) e-toll issue. The controversial toll system was bleeding money and shut down in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanral said that the end of the e-toll issue resulted in a massive improvement in its balance sheet, largely due to the absorption of all e-toll-related debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was also responsible for stabilising Sanral’s toll portfolio. During his tenure, the group has made massive progress on strategic infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This includes the R573 Moloto Road, the N2 Wild Coast Road, the N2-N3 KwaZulu-Natal upgrades, the N2 Corridor in Mpumalanga, and the N1 South Corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, the group also approved an increased borrowing limit of R16.5 billion up to 31 March 2028, including a R7 billion government-guaranteed New Development Bank facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This was key to unlocking funding capacity for toll portfolio capital investment and previously constrained capital projects,” the group said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board will now start a recruitment process for a new CEO and will announce an Acting CEO while that process is underway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said that a further announcement on the appointment of an Acting CEO will take place no later than 17 July 2026 to support a smooth handover and transition between Demana and his successor.<\/p>\n\n\n
