{"id":866421,"date":"2026-07-15T16:05:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T14:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=866421"},"modified":"2026-07-15T17:25:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T15:25:41","slug":"good-news-for-absa-customers-in-south-africa-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/866421\/good-news-for-absa-customers-in-south-africa-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Good news for Absa customers in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Absa has become the fourth major bank in South Africa to roll out new Smart ID services at branches as part of the Department of Home Affairs&#8217; (DHA&#8217;s) digital partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DHA minister Leon Schreiber announced the launch of Smart ID services at select Absa branches, which will join those available at Capitec, Standard Bank and FNB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the DHA, Absa has enabled walk-in smart ID card applications at 12 of its branches and has plans to expand the service to a further 60 branches before the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absa currently has three branches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.absa.co.za\/personal\/smart-id\/\"><strong>listed<\/strong><\/a> under the service on its website, with more expected to be added in updates. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pinetown (KZN)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rosebank (Gauteng)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waterfall Mall (North West)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Absa noted that the service is available strictly to active Absa Bank customers with a valid transactional account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In addition to its branch rollout, Absa will also introduce an innovative mobile service component, Bank on the Move, extending secure Home Affairs services to even more communities,&#8221; the DHA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Services will be fully available at the following Absa branch locations from Monday, 20 July 2026: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rosebank Mall, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greenstone Mall and Tembisa Mall in Johannesburg, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Menlyn Park in Pretoria, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waterfall Mall in Rustenburg, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Claremont Cavendish Square in Cape Town, C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ape Gate- Brackenfell, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kimberley City Centre branch, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vincent Park in KuGompo City (formerly East London), <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nelspruit Crossing in Mbombela, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mall of the North in Limpopo, and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the digital partnership, almost every major bank has committed to rolling out the new digital service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes Nedbank, Standard Bank, Absa, Discovery Bank and FNB\u2014which were part of the old trial\u2014and newcomers, Capitec, African Bank and GoTyme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until now, only Capitec, Standard Bank and FNB had launched the new digital services, with Capitec leading the pack with well over 100 branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the addition of the Absa branches, the new digital partnership has extended to 296 bank branches across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of the year, Home Affairs said that the network will grow to 750 branches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schreiber noted that the new branches have facilitated over 385,000 transactions in the four months since the new partnership went live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the expansion has been limited to Smart IDs so far, plans to expand the offerings to passports are also underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This is a developing story<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Absa has become the fourth major bank in South Africa to roll out new Smart ID services at branches as part of the Department of Home Affairs&#8217; digital partnership.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":856691,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":true,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"posted","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"2077394259989180815","_sma_x_attempts":1,"footnotes":""},"categories":[961],"tags":[6230],"class_list":["post-866421","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-banking","tag-smart-id"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/866421","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=866421"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/866421\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":866435,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/866421\/revisions\/866435"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/856691"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=866421"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=866421"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=866421"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
