The popular beach huts on Cape Town\u2019s Muizenberg shore will be temporarily dismantled as the area undergoes refurbishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established around 1901 and officially constructed into a regulated row of 174 wooden boxes by the municipality in 1929, the iconic Muizenberg Beach Huts evolved from Victorian-era bathing machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beach huts function as private spaces for beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers to change into their swimsuits and wetsuits or to store their beach gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are also one of South Africa’s most photographed landmarks, attracting tourists, photographers, and commercial film crews with their striking rainbow backdrop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe City would like to advise residents and visitors that by next week, the contractor will start dismantling the four remaining beach huts on the eastern side of the Muizenberg beachfront,\u201d said the City of Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City of Cape Town said the refurbishment project is progressing steadily and that work will soon shift to this side of the beach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City said that the iconic beach huts will be replaced with similar ones that maintain the beachfront\u2019s heritage and character once the project is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront involves replacing ageing seawalls and making significant upgrades to public amenities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project began in February 2025, and the City of Cape Town said that everything is on track for completion by December 2026, which is five months away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contractor has installed about 60% of the precast steps and promenade units, which the City said will provide coastal protection and beach access at various levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the steps will be below beach level and will be hidden from view under the sand under normal conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The in-situ cast concrete work for the Surfer\u2019s Corner section of the revetment is nearly complete, and work on the parking area next to the railway line and the landward landscaping has also begun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next week, the contractor will begin dismantling and removing the four beach huts located on the eastern side of the beachfront. The four beach huts on the western side were already removed in March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These eight removed huts will be replaced with eight new, improved huts, which the City said have been designed for greater durability while maintaining the historic design and layout as part of the upgrade project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The existing huts need to be relocated because the new, upgraded promenade will be built approximately 2 meters farther inland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City said that the setback is necessary to address the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and storm surges, and to ensure that the new seawall does not reduce the width of the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know our residents are very protective of Muizenberg\u2019s iconic beach huts,\u201d said Spatial Planning and Environment Mayoral Committee Member and Deputy Mayor Alderman Andrews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is why we want to communicate up front that we will be dismantling the remaining four huts so we can start work on the eastern side of the beachfront,\u201d said Andrews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrews explained that this is good news because it indicates that the project is progressing well and that all remains on track to complete the work on time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI again want to thank our business community, our local community, the visitors and the general public for your patience and support while we are upgrading this very popular beach destination,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour cooperation is much appreciated and makes it possible for us to work at a steady pace.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City said that the beach huts further down the coastline, closer to the river mouth, will not be impacted and will remain in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
