He played for the Wits First XV and the Wits Under-19 side, while also representing the Transvaal Under-19 team alongside future Springbok rugby stars including Wilf Rosenberg, Clive Ulyate, and Joe Kaminer.

His life took a turn after winning the Stanvac Scholarship, which enabled him to continue his studies in the United States.

He spent time at Harvard Graduate School of Chemistry before completing an MBA at Harvard Business School in 1957.

He graduated with High Distinction and earned Baker Scholar status, awarded to students in the top 3% of their class.

Instead of returning to South Africa, Chalsty began his American business career with Standard Oil (now Exxon), where he spent 12 years, including assignments in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

His most notable career move came in 1969 when he joined investment bank Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) as a research analyst.

He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming head of research, head of investment banking, and, in 1986, chief executive officer (CEO), and, a decade later, chairman.

Under Chalsty’s leadership, DLJ underwent extraordinary growth.

Annual revenue increased from $732 million when he became CEO in 1986 to $4.64 billion by 1997, while annual net income reached a then-record $291 million.

By the time Credit Suisse First Boston acquired the company in 2000, DLJ had been valued at $11.5 billion.

Highest-paid CEO on Wall Street

The firm’s workforce also expanded dramatically during his tenure, growing from around 140 employees into a global investment bank employing more than 11,000 people.

Despite the company’s rapid expansion, Chalsty developed a reputation for fostering a positive workplace culture and inspiring strong employee loyalty.

His financial success reflected DLJ’s performance.

Historical Wall Street compensation reports show that after a period of record profits, Chalsty received total cash and stock compensation of $12.6 million in a single year.

The package made him the highest-paid chief executive across the entire American investment banking industry, surpassing the leaders of larger rivals, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Following the sale of DLJ, Chalsty became chairman and co-owner of hedge fund investment firm Muirfield Capital Management, while remaining active in corporate leadership and public service.

Apart from finance, he built an extensive record of civic and philanthropic involvement.

He served as vice chairman of the New York Stock Exchange from 1990 to 1994, and as chairman of New York’s host committee for the United Nations’ 50th anniversary celebrations in 1995.

He also held leadership positions at organisations including Lincoln Centre Theatre, the American Ballet Theatre, the New York Philharmonic, Columbia University and Saint Barnabas Medical Centre.

When he stepped down as chief executive of DLJ, they established the John S. and Jennifer A. Chalsty Fellowship at Harvard Business School.

The fellowship was created to help Black South African MBA students study at Harvard, with Chalsty saying its purpose was to help “young black South Africans enjoy the privilege of a HBS education” and provide them with “an opportunity to carry its message back to their country”.

His contributions earned numerous honours, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honour and honorary doctorates from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2005 and the Medical University of South Carolina in 2015.

Chalsty died peacefully at his home at the age of 90.
