Vodacom has partnered with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to address the increasing demand for job-ready artificial intelligence (AI) and data science skills in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vodacom said that this collaboration unites industry, academia, and cloud technology to provide students with practical experience in tackling real-world AI challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative will be delivered through UJ\u2019s School of Consumer Intelligence and Information Systems, particularly its Centre for Applied Data Science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It aims to support co-designed learning programs, postgraduate research, and industry mentorship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is to create a sustainable pipeline of AI talent that is equipped to develop practical solutions for businesses and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis partnership reflects Vodacom\u2019s commitment to building a future-ready AI talent ecosystem,\u201d said Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer Shameel Joosub. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are creating a direct pathway from university research to industry impact, where students work on real AI use cases and emerge ready to practise,\u201d said Joosub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that it is about developing the next generation of AI professionals who can drive the business forward and help shape Africa\u2019s digital future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis collaboration creates a foundation for sustained capability-building and demonstrates how strategic partnerships can strengthen AI expertise at both national and continental level,\u201d said UJ College of Business and Economics Executive Dean Tankiso Moloi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor UJ, the value of university-industry partnerships lies in what they make possible over time: deeper research capacity, stronger talent development and an ecosystem that connects African expertise with African opportunities,\u201d said Moloi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The partnership is focused on high-impact areas. Master\u2019s students at UJ\u2019s Centre for Applied Data Science are conducting research aligned with Vodacom on autonomous AI systems that detect, analyse, and respond to cyber threats in telecommunications networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research is being conducted on blockchain-based methods to enhance digital identity management and prevent identity theft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These focus areas, according to the group, reflect the partnership’s goal of addressing practical digital challenges while developing scarce AI skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vodacom said that AWS plays a crucial role in this collaboration by providing students and researchers access to world-class cloud, data, and AI technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These include Amazon Bedrock, Amazon QuickSight, and Amazon Kinesis, which it said companies around the globe use to support their research and development efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThrough access to advanced tools, platforms, and computing resources, students can experiment, build, and test AI solutions in real-world environments, accelerating innovation and enhancing the practical impact of their work,\u201d said Vodacom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt AWS, we believe access to technology is key to unlocking innovation,\u201d said AWS Telco Africa Lead Prabashni Naidoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained that through this collaboration, students and researchers should gain access to world-class cloud and AI capabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
