However, the energy supplier has not implemented this measure in over a year.

The lack of load shedding has been a big help to South Africa’s mining operations, which are often energy-intensive.

Salient Feature
<th its value decline over the last six months as markets adjust their platinum valuations.

On 2 January 2026, the company’s share price was R1,450.00, which has since dropped to R1,183.30 on 28 July 2026.

The drop also resulted from fluctuations in the rand’s value, which affect international trade and can reduce the price of South African exports.

Despite this drop in share prices, the company still has a market cap of nearly R300 billion, making it one of the most valuable companies in South Africa.

While the company may appear new, having listed on the JSE only in 2025, Valterra has been a long-established company, operating as a subsidiary of Anglo American.

The company became independent after a demerger from Anglo American in May 2025, which involved both a name change and a separate JSE listing.

This means the company inherited a large portion of its infrastructure, saving it from the initial investments many new companies must make.

The inherited equipment and infrastructure, along with the record-high platinum prices at the end of 2025, have had a combined influence on Valterra.

The company was able to take advantage of the rising platinum prices by increasing its refinery output through a more stable national grid.

The stability in service delivery allowed it to produce and sell more PGM’s, while the value of its products was high.

Although the stable national grid is a positive for South Africa, the sharp rise in electricity prices may affect the country’s mining sector.

This sector uses large amounts of electricity, and municipal tariffs have been raised by approximately 9% nationwide for the 2027 financial year.

Valterra Platinum has seen a massive increase in earnings for the six
