The South African Post Office (SAPO) has received its first unqualified audit opinion from the Auditor-General in six years for its financial statements for the year ended March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Auditor-General concluded that SAPO’s consolidated and separate financial statements accurately represent the financial position of the organisation and its subsidiaries as of 31 March 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statements reflect their financial performance and cash flows for the year in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This opinion marks a significant governance milestone for SAPO, highlighting the major improvements in financial reporting, enhanced governance processes, strengthened internal controls, and a reduction in audit findings achieved during the Business Rescue process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting Chief Executive Officer Fathima Gany said that this opinion is a crucial step towards rebuilding confidence in the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For many organisations, an unqualified audit opinion is an annual milestone. For SAPO, it represents the restoration of confidence in our financial reporting after several years of governance challenges,\u201d said Gany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt confirms that our financial statements can once again be relied upon by government, regulators, creditors, business partners and other stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that the achievement reflected the deliberate decision taken during Business Rescue to strengthen governance rather than simply focus on short-term financial survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Governance decay often precedes financial distress. We therefore agreed that governance would not wait for recovery; it would become part of the recovery.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the Companies Act does not require entities under Business Rescue to prepare and audit annual financial statements, the Joint Business Rescue Practitioners have opted to continue producing audited financial statements in collaboration with the SAPO finance team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This decision aims to enhance accountability, improve governance, and build stakeholder confidence throughout the restructuring process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Business Rescue Practitioners intend for the business to emerge from Business Rescue with its statutory financial reporting up to date and in a current audit cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to note that the audit outcome should not be interpreted as an indication that the organisation\u2019s recovery is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its audit report, the Auditor-General highlighted a material uncertainty regarding going concern, noting that SAPO continues to face significant challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These include declining demand for traditional postal services, pressure on revenue, reliance on government funding to maintain liquidity, uncertainty over the renewal of its exclusive postal license, ageing infrastructure and legacy systems, and limited access to external financing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gany stated that the organisation remains focused on addressing these structural challenges through its High Care Transition Programme, which was launched internally in June 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Receiving an unqualified audit opinion does not mean our work is complete. It does, however, provide a solid governance foundation from which we can continue rebuilding the organisation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur immediate priorities remain restoring sustainable operational performance, modernising our infrastructure, growing and diversifying revenue and reducing our dependence on government support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
