change for Capitec in South Africa

Capitec Bank Holdings Limited has announced that its name will change to Capitec Limited, effective from 26 August 2026.

The name change was voted on and confirmed in the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 31 July 2026.

Despite the name change, the company will continue to be listed in the banking sector of the JSE’s financial industry and will retain the same ticker.

The name change has been filed with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, and the bank has already received confirmation of its registration.

The confirmation means that the bank can officially go by Capitec Limited, with the business believing the new name is better aligned with the group’s current evolution.

Capitec has increasingly diversified in recent years, moving beyond banking services into areas such as insurance and telecoms.

Capitec arrived in South Africa in 2001, later than many other established banks, before evolving into the largest bank in the country by client base.

It was founded in Stellenbosch by Michiel le Roux, Riaan Stassen, and Jannie Mouton, and began as a microlender with an eye on people underserved by existing banking institutions.

The company has held on to this ideology, focusing much of its development on rural communities across the country.

The banking giant currently serves over 25 million clients, more than any other financial institution in South Africa.

The bank was first listed on the JSE in 2002, with a share price of R2.75, before dropping to 80 cents per share in the first month of trading.

Capitec’s listing came just after the collapse of Saambou Bank, which triggered major volatility in South Africa’s financial sector at the time.

Today, the company is trading at R4836.63 per share, with a market cap of over R561 billion, making it one of the largest companies listed on the JSE.

The
