From how customers search and discover products through to delivery and returns, she and her team are focused on making every step of the customer journey simpler and more reliable.

Her leadership has been shaped by personal experience; losing her mother young taught her resilience, while watching her father build his own business instilled in her the value of hard work and the courage to lead through uncertainty.

That mindset guided her career, taking on leadership positions in New York and London and earning an MBA at Oxford broadened her perspective and reinforced the value of continuous learning, curiosity and inclusion.

She always intended to return home and make meaningful impact in South Africa. Today, building an Amazon store for South African customers is what energises her. For women entering tech, her philosophy is refreshingly grounded: never stop learning, back your instincts with data, consistently deliver results that build trust, which opens doors.

Above all, remember that careers grow like trees, not ladders – the most meaningful growth often comes from unexpected lateral branches.

Always, surround yourself with people who challenge and support you, and do the same for others.

Philile Mabolloane: Head of Retail: Consumables, Amazon South Africa

Philile leads Amazon’s Consumables business in South Africa, a role she describes as both a privilege and a responsibility, given that the products in her portfolio – grocery, household products, beauty, health and personal care as well as personal care appliances – are central to customers’ everyday lives.

Her leadership has been profoundly shaped by her parents: her mother taught her resilience, discipline, and the value of hard work, while her father’s kindness instilled the importance of leading with empathy and treating people with dignity.

Grounded by her faith, she leads with high energy and high standards while never losing sight of the people behind the results. Her message to young women starting their careers is bold and unapologetic: do it scared. Don’t wait to feel ready.

Confidence is built after you take the opportunity. Build credibility through excellent work, make your ambitions known, and don’t just aim for a seat at the table – prepare yourself to influence what happens there, and one day, build new tables.

Suzelle Abe: Head of Marketplace, Amazon South Africa

As the leader of Amazon’s Marketplace business in South Africa, Suzelle spends her days at the intersection of strategy, team leadership, and seller success – working to help local businesses start, grow, and thrive on Amazon.

What drives her most is the opportunity to shape the future of e-commerce in the country, knowing that every entrepreneur who joins the marketplace can reach more customers, create jobs, and build something meaningful.

Through her career, she’s learned that great leadership isn’t about having all the answers: it’s about building strong teams, empowering people, and creating space for them to grow and innovate.

Her advice to young South African women aspiring to lead in tech or e-commerce is simple but powerful: don’t wait until you feel ready. When women see other women leading and a path that fits their reality, they stay.

Her advice to young professionals is equally unflinching: own your growth. Seek the feedback that stings, take ownership of problems that aren’t strictly yours, and be someone people want to work with. The most impactful people aren’t the most talented – they’re the most curious, resilient, and trusted.

Emily Topielski: Payments Country Lead, Amazon South Africa

Emily leads payments for Amazon South Africa, making sure customers can pay conveniently and securely, while removing the friction that stops first-time online shoppers from completing a purchase.

Having held leadership roles across the US, Singapore, and South Africa – spanning operations, product management, and business development – she’s learned to be rigorous about data, stay close to the customer, and get comfortable with ambiguity fast.

There’s no playbook for much of what Amazon is building here, and she sees that as the most interesting part of the job.
