The rand strengthened slightly on Friday, with gold prices underpinning the currency as markets awaited new U.S. labour market data to indicate the next path for the Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gold firmed last week and was on track for its biggest weekly gain since January, with lower oil prices helping its value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. dollar saw little change at the end of last week, with people expecting 80,000 new jobs in the country and its unemployment rate to hold steady at 4.2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new data revealed that the U.S.’s unemployment rate had remained stable, but its economy had unexpectedly lost 23,000 jobs in the second quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In South Africa, net foreign reserves rose to approximately R1.16 trillion, according to the Reserve Bank, up from the previous month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, South Africa’s investors will be focused on manufacturing and second-quarter unemployment figures on Tuesday and mining data on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country’s benchmark 2035 government bond weakened at the end of last week, with the yield rising 4 basis points to 8.43%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
