The University of Cape Town has been named as the best university in South Africa in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ARWU, created by ShanghaiRanking<\/a>, is a global indicator of university performance, measuring research output and the quality of both education and faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rankings consider several indicators, including the number of research articles published, the number of citations, and an institution’s per capita academic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARWU also considers the accolades earned by a university’s alumni, such as Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rankings give specific rankings from 1 to 100, but categorise the universities into groups of 100 after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While none of South Africa’s universities managed to break into the top 100, UCT was ranked the country’s best university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cape Town institution was ranked in the 201-300 range and was the only South African university to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university achieved this rank largely through its number of published and highly cited articles, particularly in scientific fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UCT often ranks as South Africa’s top university, as shown in the QS World University Rankings<\/a> published earlier in the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following UCT, the second-highest-ranked university in South Africa was Wits, which was placed in the 301-400 range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with UCT and WITS, several other South African institutions were named in the top 1,000 global universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These universities all fall within a 100-university range, with institutions within the same range organised alphabetically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, both the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) are in the 601-700 range, meaning UJ will rank before UKZN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global rankings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The world’s top tertiary institution, according to the rankings, is Harvard University in the U.S., which has held the number one spot since 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university has near-perfect scores on every metric used by the ARWU, with significant gaps between it and Stanford University, which is in second place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top ten is largely comprised of famed institutions, such as Stanford and MIT in America, along with Oxford and Cambridge in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American universities dominate the top 100 rankings, with 37 institutions in this bracket and eight in the top 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China has 16 institutions in the top 100, with its highest-ranked university being Tsinghua University, ranked 18th in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rankings focus on the level and quality of academic output from each university, with contributions to scientific fields also given strong weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ARWU uses six objective metrics to score a university’s performance: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • The number of alumni who win Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (10%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The number of staff who win Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (20%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The number of highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories (20%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The number of papers published in Nature and Science (20%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The number of papers indexed in the Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index (20%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The per capita academic performance of an institution (10%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
